In order to determine the sedimentological and physico-chemical characteristics of the benthic environment and also the level, distribution and probable sources of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, sediment samples were collected at 28 stations in the northeast portion of Todos os Santos Bay. The centre and the east region of the study area showed characteristics of depositional environments with the predominance of silt and clay and high percentages of TOC, nitrogen and sulphur. The molar C/N ratios varied between 8.8 and 27.6 indicating a mixed origin of organic matter with variable marine and continental contributions. Total aliphatic hydrocarbon concentrations ranged between 1.56 and 246.91 µg.g-1 dry weight, corresponding the high concentrations to the stations situated in the centre and in the east region of the study area. The UCM represented between 60 and 96% of the total aliphatic hydrocarbons, indicating a high degree of anthropogenic contribution and the presence of petroleum degraded residues. Total PAH concentrations varied from 8 to 4163 ng.g-1 dry weight. The highest total PAH concentration was recorded at station 5 situated adjacent to the oil refinery.

Some echinoderms from the South Brazilian region are described. Seven are new to the science: Cucumaria manoelina sp.n., Thyone montoucheti sp.n., Psolus marcusi sp.n., Psolus vitoriae sp.n., Ophioderma divae sp.n., Amphioplus lucyae sp.n. and Chaetaster vanzolinicus sp.n. Some observations are presented on the distribution of Antedondubeni Bohlsche, 1886, Cucumaria pulcherrima (Ayres, 1854), Thyone belli Ludwig, 1887 and of Ophiothrix rathbuni Ludwig, 1882 in Brazilian marine shelf region.

Benthic samples were taken at 303 stations in the Ilha Grande region, down the isobath of 50 meters. In 12 of these Stations (20 samples) we found the brachiopod Bouchardia rosea (Mawe, 1823). The highest density observed for this species was 58 individuals/m2. Its occurrence is related to sediments with less of 30% of granules smaller than 420 µ, without the fraction smaller than 44µ, to salinity higher than 35‰ and probably to the enrichement process due to nearness of islands and organic material carried from Sepetiba bay. Apparently, there are no relationship, between the lenght of the valve and the position of the station and with the depth. There are, apparently, a direct relationship with salinity and a inverse with temperature. There are a tendency of the median lenght of the valve, to decrease with the increase of the aggrefation of the species. There are, apparently, three generations of the individuals in the presently samples.

The echinozoan species collected by the Exploratory Fishing and Gear Research Base of Pascagoula, Mississipi, U.S.A., between the Southwest region of U.S.A. and the Amapa (Brasil) are listed. The geo graphical distribution of twenty two species is extended. A new species, Thyone pawsoni sp. n., is described.

The geographical distribution of Holothuria (Cystipus) pseudofossor, Stylocidaris lineata, Clypeaster (Clypeaster) rosaceus Chaetaster longipes Luidia barbadensis, Amphiura princeps, Ophiophragmus pulcher and Amphipholizona delicata is extended to the Brazilian region. Cladodactyla croces and Pseudocnus perrieri were collected in the region near Mar del Plata (Argentina) and Pseudoonus dubiosus and Chiridota marenzelleri , in front of Uruguay.

The occurrence of Tosia parva (Perrier, 1881), Marginaster pectinatus Perrier, 1884 and Ldbidiaster radiosus Liltken, 1871 in the South Atlantic region is registered for the first time. The new varieties, Phrixometra longispina brasiliensis var. n., and Holothuria (Vaneyothuria) lentiginosa brasiliensis var. n., are de scribed. The genus Calliophidiaster Tommasi, 1970 is redescribed and its differences with Linckia Nardo, 1934, are reinforced. Ophiomyxa vivipara Studer, 1886 and Ophiura fallax Cherbonnier, 1959 are de scribed for the first time from Brazil. Amphiura iraciae sp. n. and A. rosae sp. n. are described.

The echinoderm fauna of the estuarine lagunar complex of Cananeia (Sao Paulo) is described. Some observations on the density and distri bution of the eight species found in the region are presented. Three species are found in great density, i.e., Mellita quinquiesperforata (echinoidea), Ophiaotys savignyi and Ophiothrix angulata (ophiuroi dea). The species found in most stations was Micropholis subtilis. Asteroids, holothurioids and crinoids are not recorded in the present samples.

Some observations on the circalittoral benthic fauna of the region south of Cabo Frio (RJ) are presented. This fauna is similar to that of Mediterranean and Oriental Atlantic region.
