Crusafontina (Mammalia, Soricidae) from Late Miocene localities in Hungary

Lukács Mészáros

Crusafontina endemica andCrusafontina kormosi constitute the oldest known group of tribe Anourosoricini, and because of their relatively primitive characters we have to see them as the most ancient types, or perhaps the ancestors of this group. Remains from five Late Miocene localities in Hungary (Rudabánya, Sümeg, Csákvár, Tardosbánya, Polgárdi 4), as well as their comparisons, systematic problems and evolutionary trends are discussed here. The studied species give some new additions to the biostratigraphy of the Late Miocene Vallesian and Turolian ages. On the basis of the occurrences in these and other European localitiesCrusafontina seems to be an indicator of well watered, wooded biotops.
