Abstract The added mass of the fluid surrounding it plats an important role in the dynamic behaviour of a submerged structure. The first few mode shapes and the respective natural frequencies of a submerged cantilever plate are found by using a finite element procedure, eigenvalues being obtained by a simultaneous iteration technique. The influence of the water depth below the plate and also of the waters lateral extent is considered, in order to test the convergency of the results. Results on the effects of the depth of immersion on the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the cantilever plate for different aspect ratios are presented.

Abstract The effect of fibre orientation and boundary conditions on the vibration and damping behaviour of thin orthotropic triangular plates is studied by using a three-noded triangular plate finite element. Isosceles triangular plates having three different included angles are analyzed.

Abstract Vibrations of skew plates immersed in water have been studied in the present work. Two skew prism fluid elements have been developed for the above study. As there is no information available on them, a few experiments have been conducted to measure the frequencies of vibration of these plates immersed in water. The results of both the theoretical and experimental investigations have been compared and found to be agreeing reasonably well. The general findings of these plates regarding their aspect ratios, thickness ratios and boundary conditions are discussed. In addition, the influence of skew angles on the vibration of skew plates have been investigated. It has been noticed that the effect of added mass is found to decrease with the increase of skew angle.

Abstract The effect of fibre orientation on the frequencies of thin square orthotropic plates is studied using a rectangular orthotropic plate finite element for various boundary conditions. The main purpose of the study is to find out in what way boundary conditions influence the frequencies of orthotropic square plates.

Abstract The effect of fibre orientation and boundary conditions on the vibration behaviour of stepped orthotropic square plates is studied using the Finite Element Method. The results are compared with those of constant thickness plates.

Abstract The effect of fibre orientation on the natural frequencies of thin square orthotropic plates having variable thickness is studied using the Rayleigh-Ritz method for various boundary conditions. In the present study plates having linear variation in thickness in one direction (either X or Y) are studied.
