Double and triple calix[4]arenis connected via the oxygen functions

Dagmar Kraft; Jan-Dirk van Loon; Michael Owens; Willem Verboom; Walter Vogt; M. Anthony McKervey; Volker Böhmer; David N. Reinhoudt

New macrocyclic molecules are described containing two or three p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene subunits connected via their oxygen atoms. These macrocycles are available by two general methods which are capable of producing assemblies with bridges of varying rigidity and length.

Regiospecific synthesis of α-(phenylthio)ketones via rhodium(II) acetate catalysed addition of thiophenol to α-diazoketones

M. Anthony McKervey; Piniti Ratananukul

Abstract αα-Addition of thiophenol to α-diazoketones is catalysed efficiently by rhodium(II) acetate in benzene solution at room temperature, offering a convenient regio-specific route to a variety of α-(phenylthio)ketones.

Tetrahedron Letters | 1983

Regiospecific synthesis of α-(phenylthio)cycloalkenones and of α-phenyl-α-(phenylthio) ketones VIA αα-addition of phenylsulphenyl chloride to ∢-diazoketones

M. Anthony McKervey; Pinit Ratananukul

Abstract Cyclic α-diazoketones react with phenylsulphenyl chloride at room temperature to furnish α-chloro-α-(phenylthio)cycloalkanones which undergo ready dehydrochlorination to α-(phenylthio)cycloalkenones when treated with triethylamine; acyclic, terminal α-diazoketones also furnish α-chloro-α-(phenylthio)adducts which are useful electrophiles in the synthesis of α-phenyl-α-(phenylthio)ketones.

Synthesis, X-ray crystal structure and cation binding properties of a tetrahomodioxacalix[4]arene tetraester

Françoise Arnaud-Neu; Suzanne Cremin; Des Cunningham; Stephen J. Harris; Patrick McArdle; M. Anthony McKervey; Maureen McManus; Marie-José Schwing-Weill; K. Ziat

AbstractTreatment ofp-t-butyltetrahomodioxacalix[4]arene with ethyl bromoacetate yields a tetraester derivative (4) whose crystal and molecular structure have been determined and whose ion binding properties have been assessed by phase transfer and stability constant measurements. Colorless transparent triclinic crystals (obtained from methoxyethanol) C62H84O14,a = 10.347(2),b = 11.583(2),c = 13.448(3) Å,α = 72.04(2),β = 86.50(2)°,γ = 81.23(2)°, space groupn

Some comments on the thermal stability of substituted ammonium, phosphonium, and arsonium permanganates and their use in alkane oxidation

Bernard P. Leddy; M. Anthony McKervey; Peter McSweeney

High-yield catalytic metathesis of alkenyl tosylates with applications in organic synthesis

RECENT ADVANCES IN STEREOSELECTIVE SYNTHESIS INVOLVING DIAZOCARBONYL INTERMEDIATES

Michael P. Doyle; M. Anthony McKervey

n,Z = 1, MoKα radiationλ = 0.70930 Å. Refinement was carried out using 2221 reflections withI > 1.5σ(I). The complexation properties resemble those of calix[6]arene hexaester (6), although weaker, with a preference for the larger alkali cations. Ca2+ and Ba2+; though not extracted, are more strongly complexed than alkali cations. Eu3+ is better complexed than Na+.

Oxidation Adjacent to Sulfur

Michael Peter Kennedy; M. Anthony McKervey

Abstract Tetraethyl- and tetrabutylammonium permanganate are less prone to explosive decomposition when heated than are benzyl(triethyl)ammonium and methyl-(triphenyl) phosphonium permanganate and are about equally effective as oxidants for the conversion of alkanes into alcohol and ketones.

The Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics | 1978

Heat capacity and thermodynamic properties of diamantane from 5 to 540 K

Edgar F. Westrum; M. Anthony McKervey; John T.S Andrews; R.C Fort; Timothy Clark

The results of differential scanning calorimetry studies on caged hydrocarbons have been used, with existing data, to propose a new interpretation of orientational disorder in plastic crystals. New empirical relationships are reported between the entropy of transition, plastic crystal range and molecular shape.
