Abstract Single crystals of the thermochromic distibane (Me 3 Sn) 4 Sb 2 ( 1 ) are obtained by irradiation of (Me 3 Sn) 3 Sb with sunlight. The crystal structure of 1 is reported as linear chains of distibane molecules in trans conformation with Sb ⋯ Sb contacts of 389 ppm. Diffuse reflexion spectra of 1 in the solid state and in solution demonstrate thermochromic effect. The Raman spectrum of solid 1 exhibits strong absorption at 162 cm −1 for ν(Sb 2 ).

Abstract Single crystals of the distibanes (Me 3 M) 4 Sb 2 ( 1 : M = Si, 2 : M = Ge) are obtained by the oxidation in air of (Me 3 M) 3 Sb. The crystal structure of 2 is reported. 2 forms linear chains of distibane molecules in trans conformation with Sb ··· Sb contacts of 386 pm at −110°C and 390 pm at 22°C. The thermal expansion of crystals of 2 and (Me 3 Sn) 4 Sb 2 ( 3 ) has been determined. UV-VIS spectra of 1 – 3 , Me 4 Sb 2 ( 4 ), Et 4 Sb 2 ( 5 ), and Ph 4 Sb 2 ( 6 ) in different phases have been recorded. The spectra of 1 – 5 are consistent with the visible colour changes.

Abstract Two-electron reduction of RSbBr 2 ( 1 : R C 2 H 5 ; 2 : R n-C 3 H 7 ; 3 : R n-C 4 H 9 ) in tetrahydrofurans in presence of Bu 4 NPF 6 followed by extraction with toluene has given the cyclic and polymeric organoantimony(I) compounds (RSb) n (n = 4, 5) and (RSb) x ( x ⪢ 5), which have been identified by 1 H NMR and mass spectroscopy. Mechanistic aspects are discussed.

Abstract Reaction of Mg and Me3,SbCl with Ph2,SbCl or PhSbCl2, gives Ph2,SbSiMe3, (1) or PhSb(SiMe3)2, (2). Sulfur inserts into 1 to give Ph2,SbSSiMe3, (3). Products of action of S8 on 2 are 3, PhSb(SSiMe3,)2, (4), (Me3,Si)2,S, and Sb2S3. Hydrolysis or methanolysis of 1, or 2 give Ph2,SbH2 (5), or PhSbH2, (6) respectively. Die Reaktion von Mg und Me3SiCl mit Ph2SbCl oder PhSbCl2 fuhrt zu Ph2,SbSiMe3 (1) oder PhSb(SiMe3,)2, (2). Schwefel insertiert in 1 unter Bildung von Ph2,SbSSiMe3, (3). Produkte der Reaktion von S8, mit 2 sind 3, PhSb(SSiMe3,)2, (4), (Me3,Si)2,S und Sb2S3. Durch Hydrolyse oder Methanolyse von 1 oder 2 entstehen Ph2SbH (5) oder PhSbH2 (6).

Abstract Electroreduction of (Ph 2 Sb) 2 O ( 1 ) in THF gives Ph 2 Sb − , which can also be obtained by uptake of two electrons on (Ph 2 Sb) 2 ( 2 ). Ph 2 Sb − reacts with the supporting salt ( n Bu 4 NPF 6 ) to yield tributylamine and Ph 2 Sb( n Bu) ( 3 ). The electro-reduction of 3 and Ph 3 Sb ( 4 ) gives also the anion Ph 2 Sb − . There is a considerable influence of the electrode surface on the redox properties of 1–4 . Mechanistic aspects are discussed.

Abstract Distibines of the type R 2 SbSbR′ 2 with R = CH 3 , R′ = C 2 H 5 ( 1 ), R = CH 3 , R′= n -C 3 H 7 ( 2 ), R = CH 3 , R′= C 6 H 5 ( 3 ), R = C 2 H 5 , R′= C 6 H 5 ( 4 ), R = n -C 3 H 7 , R′ = C 6 H 5 ( 5 ), and R = CH 3 , R′ = 2,4,6-(CH 3 ) 2 C 6 H 2 ( 6 ) are formed in equilibria by exchange reactions of the respective distibines of the type R 4 Sb 2 and R′ 4 Sb 2 .

Abstract The uptake of two electrons by (Ph 2 Sb) 2 , 1 , yields Ph 2 Sb − , 2 . Two-electron oxidation of 1 gives the cationic species Ph 2 Sb + , 3 . At room temperature 3 is reduced in two steps to 2 via the intermediate Ph 2 Sb, 4 .
