We present high-efficiency grating couplers for coupling between a single-mode fiber and nanophotonic waveguides, fabricated both in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) and InP membranes using BenzoCycloButene wafer bonding. The coupling efficiency is substantially increased by adding a gold bottom mirror to the structures. The measured coupling efficiency to fiber is 69% for SOI grating couplers and 56% for bonded InP membrane grating couplers

We demonstrate a very compact multifunctional photonic-crystal demultiplexer on high index contrast InP-membrane for coarse WDM applications. Polarization diversity is implemented using 2D-grating couplers. The performance of the device is evaluated using integrated p-i-n photodetectors. Polarization diversity from fiber to detector-without intermediate functional device-results in a minimal polarization dependent loss (PDL) of 0.2 dB. This value increases to 1.1 dB when including the photonic-crystal demultiplexer.

Integration of grating couplers with a compact photonic crystal demultiplexer on an InP membrane

We demonstrate the integration of a 30% efficient grating coupler with a compact photonic crystal wavelength demultiplexer (DeMUX). The DeMUX has seven output channels that are spaced 10 nm apart and is aimed at coarse WDM applications. The integrated devices are realized on a high-index-contrast InP membrane using a simple benzocyclobutene wafer bonding technique. Cross talks of -10 to -12 dB for four channels 20 nm apart are obtained without optimization.

Photonic-crystal-based demultiplexers, compact and versatile, are successfully used to demonstrate a polarisation-diversity receiving InP-based chip and a laser with integrated wavelength monitor. Selectivity improvements are discussed.

Experimental Observation of Band-Edge Lasing in Broad Planar 2D Photonic Crystal Waveguides

Cyril Cambournac; Omer Khayam; M. Ayre; L. Martinelli; H. Benisty

We report preliminary experiments on in-plane lasing in large-area planar 2D photonic crystal waveguides used as open resonators. Lasing is attributed to an unexpected feedback mechanism originating from Littrow diffraction at the photonic crystal walls.

Omer Khayam; M. Ayre; Cyril Cambournac; H. Benisty; Wolfram H. P. Pernice; Dominic F. G. Gallagher

We propose Littrow based lasing of band edge modes in an open resonator formed by broad photonic crystal waveguide. The concept is developed by plane wave and FDTD simulations of bulk crystal and waveguide.

Grating coupled photonic crystal demultiplexer with integrated detectors on InP-membrane

F. Van Laere; D. Van Thourhout; R. Baets; T. Stomeo; Thomas F. Krauss; M. Ayre; Cyril Cambournac; Henri Benisty; Romain Brenot

We report on the successful integration of grating fiber couplers, compact photonic crystal demultiplexers and efficient p-i-n photodetectors on a single bonded InP-membrane chip. Polarization independent operation is obtained by implementing polarization diversity.
