Abstract Using data from more than 10 years of observations with the Akeno Giant Air Shower Array (AGASA), we published a result that the energy spectrum of ultra-high energy cosmic rays extends beyond the cutoff energy predicted by Greisen [Rhys. Rev. Lett. 16 (1966) 748] and Zatsepin and Kuzmin [Zh. Eksp. Teor. Fiz. 4 (1966) 114]. In this paper, we reevaluate the energy determination method used for AGASA events with respect to the lateral distribution of shower particles, their attenuation with zenith angle, shower front structure, delayed particles observed far from the core and other factors. The currently assigned energies of AGASA events have an accuracy of ±25% in event-reconstruction resolution and ±18% in systematic errors around 10 20 eV. This systematic uncertainty is independent of primary energy above 10 19 eV. Based on the energy spectrum from 10 14.5 eV to a few times 10 20 eV determined at Akeno, there are surely events above 10 20 eV and the energy spectrum extends up to a few times 10 20 eV without a GZK cutoff.

We will report the observations of TeV gamma ray flares from Markarian 501 using Telescope Array Prototype. The observation were carried out continuously from the end of March to the end of July in 1997. The energy spectrum, and the time variation of the gamma ray intensities are shown. The intensity has been changed by the order of magnitude in this period and the possible quasi periodic oscillation of 12.7days were discovered.We report the observations of TeV gamma-ray flares from Markarian 501 using the Telescope Array Prototype. The atmospheric transparency measured with a LIDAR system at the Telescope Array experiment

An atmospheric transparency was measured using a LIDAR with a pulsed UV laser (355 nm) at the observation site of Telescope Array in Utah, USA. The measurement at night for two years in 2007–2009 revealed that the extinction coefficient by aerosol at the ground level is 0.033−0.012+0.016km−1 and the vertical aerosol optical depth at 5 km above the ground is 0.035−0.013+0.019. A model of the altitudinal aerosol distribution was built based on these measurements for the analysis of atmospheric attenuation of the fluorescence light generated by ultra high energy cosmic rays.

Chaos in Cosmic Ray Air Showers

Unexpected chaotic features are found in time series of arrival time intervals of successive air showers with (E > 3 × 1014 eV). Over 99 % of air shower arrival time intervals obey the Poisson distribution law representing stochastic behaviors, but occasionally there are air showers showing real chaotic behaviors as distinguished from both random and colored noises. With two systems of the Kinki university installations, we found 13 cases showing chaotic time series in 3.36 yr with the system-1 and the 1.37 yr with the system-2. Five out of 10 chaotic air showers of the Kinki installation are detected during the same time zone also by the Osaka City university installation which is at 115 km distance from the Kinki one. In a remarkable example of September 19, 1991, the correlation dimension was observed to have dropped from about 4 to the minimum of 1.3 and recovered smoothly in about 38 h. The chaos structure in this case is detected in nearly the same time zone at the Ohya station of the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research, University of Tokyo, which is separated from the Kinki one by 460 km. Formation of chaos structure due to energetic cosmic ray dust particles is suggested. Progress of cosmic ray physics may be expected with the study of air showers marked with chaos.

Observation of time correlation in cosmic air shower network

In order to measure time correlation of primary cosmic rays, a network observation of extensive air showers started in Japan. The network as Large Area Air Shower (LAAS) group consists of nine air-shower-stations (seven institutes and 26.000 km2) using the Global Positioning System (GPS). We propose an analytical procedure to extract time-limited fractal structure from time series of arrival time intervals of successive air showers and present the results of the analysis by using the network data.
