Positron annihilation in carbon black–polymer composites

M. Dębowska; J. Rudzińska-Girulska; Adam Jezierski; A. Pasternak; R. Poźniak

Abstract Positron lifetime spectra and Doppler broadening of the annihilation line were measured for samples of carbon black/polyethylene and polypropylene composites with varying amount of the filler. Tensile strength, resistivity, EPR resonance were studied in addition to have the samples better characterized. The decrease in resistivity of samples, accompanied by the worsening of mechanical properties, the drop both in the intensities of Ps lifetime components in the lifetime spectra and in the line-shape parameter values, were observed with increase in the carbon black content. The presence of radicals associated with aromatic structure of the carbon sheets and others associated with the surface oxygen functional groups was established by EPR measurements for the carbon blacks being used as fillers. The carbon black of the highest specific surface area influenced the measured characteristics the most.

Influence of substituents on positron annihilation in styrene copolymers

Results of angular correlation of annihilation radiation (ACAR) and positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) measurements are presented for five styrene copolymers: poly(co-styrene-phenylmaleimide) and its three derivatives with chlorine as well as for one with the OH group substituted at the benzene ring. It occurs that the chlorine substituted at three different positions at the benzene ring poly(co-styrene-o (or-m,-p)-chlorophenylmaleimide) inhibits the formation of the positronium to different extent. The greatest effect is observed in case of the chlorine atom substituted at the benzene ring at the ortho-position towards the nitrogen atom. The two long lifetimes (τ3 and τ4) observed in the lifetime spectra are connected with the bimodal distributions of the free volume radius in the samples.

AbstractPositron annihilation has been applied to study samples of two crosslinked epoxy resins: onglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (Epikote 828) and polyglycidyl-ether of phenol-formaldehyde novolac (Epikote 155) cured with 4,4′-diamino-diphenylo-methane (MDA), phenol-formaldehyde novolac resin (Novolac Z) and bisphenol A (formaldehyde resin). Results of measurements of positron lifetime spectra were compared with the ones coming from DMTA, flexural strength testing and density measurements. The most important features of samples (glass transition temperature, storage modulus, flexural strength, crosslinking density and tan δ proved to be correlated with the product
