Doppler-free spectra of gas phase atoms near a glass-vapour interface are obtained by monitoring the reflection of a probe beam-instead of its transmission-in three-level saturation spectroscopy. Experiments performed on the 3S-3P-4D cascade system of Na have allowed the authors to monitor two-photon-induced saturated dispersion of Na atoms.

The paper presents a theoretical approach of the long-range interaction between an atomic system in an arbitrary quantum level and dispersive dielectric surface in thermal equilibrium at temperature T(Gorza et. al, 2006) This theoretical study is performed within the frame work of the quantum-mechanical linear response - using generalised susceptibilities for both atom and e.m. field -and allows one to derive a general expression for the atomic energy shift in front of any material surfaces.

The atom-surface interaction is one of the simplest prototype of the universal dipole-dipole interaction between neutral bodies and a key phenomenon in the ultimate cohesion of the matter. Here, we report on a spectroscopic investigation of the vW interaction exerted onto the excited atoms of a vapour nanocell, whose nanometric thickness varies locally.

The principle of coherent Dicke narrowing in a thin vapor cell, in which sub-Doppler spectral line shapes are observed under a normal irradiation for a {lambda}/2 thickness, is generalized to two-photon spectroscopy. Only the sum of the two wave vectors must be normal to the cell, making the two-photon scheme highly versatile. A comparison is provided between the Dicke narrowing with copropagating fields, and the residual Doppler broadening occurring with counterpropagating geometries. The experimental feasibility is discussed on the basis of a first observation of a two-photon resonance in a 300-nm-thick Cs cell. Extension to the Raman situation is finally considered.

We show that a sub-Doppler phenomenon, which is a consequence of the anisotropy of the atomic free flight, is quite general and can even be observed in the weak-field limit as due to the transient coherent regime on a resonant two level system. In the experiment, we send an ultra low power beam of a tunable FM laser on a thick Cs cell and synchronously detect the modulated transmission.

Summary form only given. The heated Cs vapor is excited by a pump beam tuned to the D/sub 1/ resonance at 894 nm and by a weak (frequency modulated) probe beam at 876 nm. The pump beam itself is sent off axis, has a large emission linewidth, and is often slightly detuned from the D/sub 1/ line, to populate the intermediate level in a broad velocity band. Experiments have been performed on several Cs vapor cells, with different input windows.
