Abstract We derive invariants associated with compact real three-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds which can be combined to form a component of Thurston complex invariant. Explicit formulas for the Chern-Simons invariant of irreducible U(n)–flat connections on hyperbolic fibered manifolds are obtained. We discuss supersymmetry surviving for supergravity solutions involving real hyperbolic factors, and briefly review the determinant line bundle with its connection to the eta invariant, the global anomaly formula, and the vanishing theorems for type (0, q) cohomology of locally symmetric spaces.

We investigate an alternative compactification of extra dimensions using local cosmic string in the Brans-Dicke gravity framework. In the context of dynamical systems it is possible to show that there exist a stable field configuration for the Einstein-Brans-Dicke equations. We explore the analogies between this particular model and the Randall-Sundrum scenario.

Chiral cosmic strings are naturally produced at the end of D-term inflation and they present very interesting cosmological consequences. In this work, we investigate the formation and evolution of wakes by a chiral string. We show that, for cold dark matter, the mechanism of forming wakes by a chiral string is similar to the mechanism by an ordinary string.

We present a class of exact vacuum solutions corresponding to de Sitter and warm inflation models in the framework of scalar-tensor cosmologies. We show that in both cases the field equations reduce to planar dynamical systems with constraints. Then, we carry out a qualitative analysis of the models by examining the phase diagrams of the solutions near the equilibrium points.

We consider scalar and spinor particles in the spacetime of a domain wall in the context of low energy effective string theories, such as the generalized scalar-tensor gravity theories. This class of theories allows for an arbitrary coupling of the wall and the (gravitational) scalar field. First, we derive the metric of a wall in the weak-field approximation and we show that it depends on the walls surface energy density and on two post-Newtonian parameters. Then, we solve the Klein-Gordon and the Dirac equations in this spacetime. We obtain the spectrum of energy eigenvalues and the current density in the scalar and spinor cases, respectively. We show that these quantities, except in the case of the energy spectrum for a massless spinor particle, depend on the parameters that characterize the scalar-tensor domain wall.

We discuss the matching of the BPS part of the spectrum for a (super)membrane, which gives the possibility of getting the membranes results via string calculations. In the small coupling limit of M theory the entropy of the system coincides with the standard entropy of type IIB string theory (including the logarithmic correction term). The thermodynamic behavior at a large coupling constant is computed by considering M theory on a manifold with a topology
