A ’state of the art’ of women’s studies in Russia would not be complete without an interview with Anastasia Posadskaya, one of the founders of the Moscow Centre for Gender Studies in 1989. When I interviewed Posadskaya, who is now working in New York, she was delighted that the board of the Open Society Institute had approved and funded all initiatives proposed by her Network Women’s Program, which is a part of the Soros Foundation network. Soros seeks to finance ’open societies’, for instance in Eastern and Central Europe through national foundations, network programmes and NGO activities. ’Open societies’ are characterized by ’a reliance on the rule of law, the existence of a democratically elected government, a diverse and vigorous civil society, respect for minorities and minority opinions, and a free-market economy’ (Building Open Societies, 1997 : 9). In 1994 Lisbon was the ’Cultural Capital of Europe’, and within that framework women academics explored the feminine side of Portuguese expansion. We charted the life and times of nuns, rich widows, female orphans and adventurers, who in the wake of Vasco da Gama or Bartolomeu Dias followed their vocation or sought their pleasure on the other side of the world. Cape Verde, Brazil, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau or Goa (India) most of Portugal’s former colonies were represented at an international conference, ’On the Feminine Side of Portuguese Expansion’, which took place in Lisbon in November 1994.
