Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a process‐oriented lifecycle model for ensuring quality in e‐learning development and delivery. As a dynamic and iterative process, quality assurance (QA) is intertwined with the e‐learning development process.Design/methodology/approach – After reviewing the existing literature, particularly focusing on QA frameworks, procedures, and methodology, a process‐oriented model structured around three sequential non‐linear phases is presented: before: planning and analysis; during: design, prototype and production; and after: post‐production and delivery. This model is supported by an advanced information system used to organize, track, collect, and generate reports regarding QA changes and needed updates.Findings – Following a process‐oriented lifecycle approach, the paper emphasises that QA requires a supportive environment that explicitly recognizes quality as a work value and as an enabler for reaching organizational goals.Practical implications – The paper ...

As a multidimensional construct which requires multiple competencies, online teaching is forcing universities to rethink traditional faculty roles and competencies. With this consideration in mind, this paper presents a process-oriented framework structured around three sequential non-linear phases: (1) before: preparing, planning, and designing; (2) during: facilitating, interacting, and providing/gathering feedback; and (3) after: reflecting and considering lessons learned. Grounded on existing models and on our experience designing and working with faculty designing and teaching online courses, this framework provides a systemic understanding of the various roles and competencies associated with online teaching. Use of this framework should enable higher education institutions (HEIs) to develop comprehensive and effective faculty development programs, capable of helping faculty create and facilitate effective learning opportunities for all students.

This study assessed the predictive relationships between faculty engagement, learner satisfaction, and outcomes across multiple learning delivery modes LDMs. Participants were enrolled in courses with the options of three learning delivery modes: face-to-face, satellite broadcasting, and live video-streaming. The predictive relationship between faculty engagement and student satisfaction remained constant across the three learning delivery mode groups. In addition, faculty engagement was an effective predictor for learner satisfaction, regardless of LDM. Similarly, the predictive relationship between faculty engagement and learning outcomes as measured by final grades remained constant. The results also suggested that an increase in the faculty engagement score was accompanied by an increased probability of obtaining a better course final grade. Overall, findings from the study supported the importance of faculty engagement in student learning outcomes and satisfaction regardless of the LDM.

In this paper, a conceptual and operational framework for business process reengineering in higher education is proposed. The outline of a sequential and non-linear four-step framework designed to reengineer higher education administrative and academic processes is presented. The first two steps, initiating and analysing, are used to examine, document, and flowchart the process targeted for reengineering; the last two steps, reengineering/implementing and evaluating, are intended to prototype, put into operation, and assess the effectiveness of the reengineered process. Early involvement of stakeholders, an in-depth understanding of the organisational and socio-cultural context, sustained support from senior leadership, and planned leveraging of information technology are critical to successful implementation.
