Comparison of the Obturation Density of Cold Lateral Compaction Versus Warm Vertical Compaction Using the Continuous Wave of Condensation Technique

Christopher S. Lea; Michael J. Apicella; Pete Mines; Peter P. Yancich; M. Harry Parker

The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare quantitatively the density of standard cold lateral gutta-percha compaction and warm vertical compaction by using the continuous wave of condensation technique. Forty transparent acrylic blocks with 30-degree, curved root canals were instrumented using Gates Glidden burs and Profile 0.06 taper rotary nickel-titanium files in a crown-down manner. The blocks were weighed and randomly assigned to two evenly distributed groups. Group A was obturated with the cold lateral-compaction technique using medium-fine, gutta-percha accessory points until the canal was completely filled. Group B was obturated with the continuous wave of condensation technique until the canal was completely filled. The blocks were weighed again after obturation. Data were analyzed using a two-sample t test at the 5% significance level. Results demonstrated that the continuous wave of condensation technique resulted in a significantly greater density compared with cold lateral compaction. Warm vertical compaction using the continuous wave of condensation technique in acrylic blocks resulted in a greater gutta-percha fill by weight compared with standard cold lateral compaction.

Intracanal Placement of Calcium Hydroxide: A Comparison of Techniques, Revisited

Craig P. Torres; Michael J. Apicella; Peter P. Yancich; M. Harry Parker

The goal of this in vitro study was to compare the effectiveness of three different placement techniques of calcium hydroxide paste in a curved canal. An acrylic resin block with a 44-degree curvature was instrumented to a #40 Flex-R file. The canal was filled with radiopaque calcium hydroxide paste using the following techniques: group 1, the paste was injected with an Ultradent tip; group 2, the paste was injected as in group 1 and followed by a size 35 Lentulo to working length; and group 3, the paste was placed with a size 35 Lentulo only, to working length. Each technique was performed 25 times. The radiodensity of the simulated canal was measured at 1, 3, 5, and 7 mm from the canal terminus. At 1 mm, the Lentulo was significantly better than the other two techniques. At 3 mm, the Lentulo technique and the combined technique were better than the Ultradent tip alone.

A technique to determine a desired preparation axial inclination

M. Harry Parker; John R. Ivanhoe; John S. Blalock; Kevin B. Frazier; Kevin D. Plummer

The guidelines recommended in the literature for the convergence angle of a crown preparation vary from 3 to 24 degrees. There is a lack of guidelines on techniques to achieve a specific axial inclination. The purpose of this article was to present a practical technique, with a diamond rotary cutting instrument of known axial inclination, to determine the diamond rotary cutting instrument angulations required to achieve the desired axial inclination of a preparation.
