Characterization of carbide phase in nonledeburitic high-speed steel containing Ti and Nb

Janusz Richter; M. Hetmańczyk; Jan Cwajna

The article has intended to give a summary of the investigations of carbides in the new nonledeburitic high-speed steel (NHSS). The carbide phase and its changes during heat treatment have proved to be both qualitatively and quantitatively different from that in conventional HSS. The influence on cutting performance from the dispersed phase has been established. These factors of service properties can be effectively controlled by means of the heat treatment.

Characteristics of Phenomena in Powders Type RE2Zr2O7-Al2O3 in High Temperature Annealing Conditions

G. Moskal; L. Swadźba; M. Hetmańczyk; B. Witala

The paper presents test results and characterizes the structural stability of powders, which form a mixture of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) and gadolinium, based on rare earth zirconates. This mixture is provided to create thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) by spraying. The purpose of the tests was to determine the influence of temperature on reactions, occurring between those powders within a temperature range from 25°C to 1500°C, while such conditions were to simulate the conditions, which occur during creation of TBCs and they give an answer to the question concerning mutual reactivity of the powders. The requirements for new materials, provided to spray the TBCs, indicate the necessity to prepare the materials, which do not show tendency towards reactions with the Al2O3, formed during oxidation of Ni (Co) CrAlY, while this reaction is of type bond coat. The tests included differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analysis and differential thermal analysis (DTA) of powder mixtures. Diffraction analysis was also performed before and after the tests have been finished. The DSC analysis results, obtained at a range of high temperature, did not show any thermal effects, which indicate a low level of mutual reactivity of the powders. However, the DTA analysis suggests presence of such effects at temperature close to 1300°C, and it indicates the necessity to verify exactly the obtained results. Results of the XRD measurement showed that after annealing process already at 1100°C the perovskite oxide of GdAlO3 was present.

Quantitative description of the structure and substructure of hot - deformed Fe - Ni austenitic alloy

K. J. Ducki; M. Hetmańczyk; D. Kuc

The paper presents the results of research concerning the influence of hot deformation parameters on the structure and substructure as well as the plastic properties of a Fe–Ni austenitic alloy. The research was performed on a torsion plastometer in the range of temperatures of 900÷1150°C, at a strain rate 0.1 and 1.0 s-1. Plastic flow curves have been drawn up and the interrelations have been determined between the process parameters and the recrystallized grain size, inhomogeneity and shape. Functional relations between the Zener-Hollomon parameter and the mean grain size after dynamic recrystallization have been developed and the hot deformation activation energy has been estimated. The examination of substructure on TEM allowed the calculation of structural parameters: the average subgrain area and the mean dislocation density. A detailed investigation has shown that the substructure is inhomogeneous, consists of dense dislocation walls, subgrains and recrystallized regions.

The Influence of Silicon Amount on Structure of Si Modified Aluminide Coating Deposited on Ti46Al7Nb Alloy by Slurry Method

M. Góral; G. Moskal; L. Swadźba; M. Hetmańczyk

The alloys based on the intermetallic phases from Ti-Al system are materials which, on the grounds of their resistance characteristics, could be widely used in automotive and aerospace applications. The insufficient oxidation resistance of this alloys could be increased by the coating silicon modification. The technology used in this investigation was the immersion in water-based slurry containing metal powders. MHI high-Nb (14 wt %) alloy has been used as the research material for the coatings produced. The water-based slurries containing Al and Si powders have been prepared with 0-80 wt % Si content. The diffusion treatment has been done at 950oC in 4h in the Ar atmosphere. The investigation has showed that the thickness of the coatings ranged from 30 to 40 m. The structure of the Si-modified aluminide coatings is as follows: (a) outer zone consisting of TiAl3 phase and titanium silicides, (b) middle zone consisting of columnar titanium silicides in phase TiAl3 matrix (c) the inner zone consisting of TiAl2 phase. The XRD phase analysis has confirmed Ti5Si3 creation and, in case of the high silicon content (above 20 wt %), also other silicides: types Ti5Si4,TiSi2,TiSi
