It has been believed for many years that the modern global climate is more or less stable and that there are no grounds to expect noticeable changes in the immediate future. Proposals made by scientists since the late 19th century as to the possible climatic effects of increasing amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere due to burning carbon fuel were not credited and met no support.

The great interest in study of the biosphere at the present time is due to the fact that local human effects on the biosphere have been replaced by worldwide influences on its composition, resources, and structure. The evolution of the biosphere is directly linked to the differentiation of the biological, and subsequently of the social, functions of living organisms that occurs against the background of the geological history of the earth.
