Seasonality of reproduction in sheep

Abstract Unlike most domestic livestock species, sheep are widely known as an animal with marked seasonality of breeding activity. The annual cycle of daily photoperiod has been identified as the determinant factor of this phenomenon, while environmental temperature, nutritional status, social interactions, lambing date and lactation period are considered to modulate it. The aim of this paper is to review the current state of knowledge of the reproductive seasonality in sheep. Following general considerations concerning the importance of seasonal breeding as a reproductive strategy for the survival of species, the paper describes the manifestations of seasonality in both the ram and the ewe. Both determinant and modulating factors are developed and special emphasis is given to the neuroendocrine base of photoperiodic regulation of seasonal breeding. Other aspects such as the role of melatonin, the involvement of thyroid hormones and the concept of photorefractoriness are also reviewed.

Effect of maternal cold exposure on brown adipose tissue and thermogenesis in the neonatal lamb.

1. This study examines the effect of chronic cold exposure during pregnancy, induced by winter shearing twin‐bearing ewes 4 weeks before predicted lambing date, on O2 consumption and CO2 production during non‐rapid‐eye‐movement (REM) sleep in lambs maintained for at least 1 h at warm (28‐18 degrees C) and cold (14‐5 degrees C) ambient temperatures at 1, 4, 14 and 30 days of age. This was combined with measurement of the thermogenic activity (GDP binding to uncoupling protein in mitochondrial preparations) of perirenal adipose tissue from lambs immediately after birth and at 33 days of age. 2. Lambs born from shorn (cold‐exposed) ewes were 15% heavier (P < 0.01) and possessed 21% (P < 0.01) more perirenal adipose tissue that contained 40% more protein and mitochondrial protein than unshorn (P < 0.05) controls. Total GDP binding in perirenal adipose tissue was 40% greater (P < 0.05) in lambs born from shorn ewes but there was no difference in lipid content of this tissue between the two groups. 3. At 1 day of age, lambs born from shorn ewes exhibited a 16% higher (P < 0.05) rate of O2 consumption (per kilogram bodyweight) at the warm temperature and a 40% greater metabolic response to the cold ambient temperature. All lambs born from shorn ewes responded to cold exposure without shivering (i.e. via non‐shivering thermogenesis) whilst shivering was measured in four out of seven lambs in the unshorn group. These differences had disappeared by 4 days of age as a result of a 25% increased (P < 0.01) rate of O2 consumption in the warm in lambs born from unshorn ewes and a 20% decrease (P < 0.05) in the response to the cold in lambs from shorn ewes. Shivering during cold exposure was measured in six out of nine lambs born from shorn ewes indicating a rapid alteration in thermoregulatory responses to cold during the first few days of life. 4. The levels of GDP binding and mitochondrial protein in perirenal adipose tissue fell by one‐third in both groups of lambs during the first 33 days of life whereas lipid content either increased or was unchanged. This indicated that brown adipose tissue (BAT) was developing the characteristics of white adipose tissue.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

The ‘ram effect’ as a way of modifying the reproductive activity in the ewe

The seasonality of breeding activity in sheep represents an important constraint in the breeding program of commercial flocks. The ‘ram effect’ is one among various techniques available to manipulate reproduction during the anoestrous season but with the advantages of being inexpensive, of easy application and free from causing problems to the consumer of animal foods (i.e. hormone residues). The aim of this paper is to summarize the most important aspects of the ram effect, including the nature of the ram stimuli involved, the behavioural and physiological events elicited in the ewe as a result of the presence of the ram, the neuroendocrine basis of the phenomenon and the various factors associated with variation in response. The effects of a wide range of social relationships on reproductive activity in sheep and other species are also discussed.

The effect of shearing on the energy metabolism of the pregnant ewe.

1. Metabolizable energy (ME) intakes, heat production, non-protein respiratory quotient (NPRQ) and the plasma concentrations of glucose, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), 3-hydroxybutyrate, insulin, growth hormone (GH) and cortisol were measured in shorn and unshorn pregnant ewes. 2. Lamb birth-weight was 17% higher from shorn ewes despite similar ME intakes in the two groups. Shearing resulted in a significant decrease in the digestibility of dry matter and energy. 3. Both shorn and unshorn ewes were found to be in positive nitrogen balance and negative energy balance. Heat production was 28% higher in shorn ewes. This increase in heat production in the shorn group could be completely accounted for by an increase in the oxidation of fatty acids as measured using the NPRQ values. 4. Despite an apparent increase in the use of fat as an energy source there were no effects of shearing on the mean plasma concentrations of NEFA, 3-hydroxybutyrate, GH and cortisol. 5. Measurements made at 1 h intervals for 24 h indicated a tendency for the concentrations of glucose to be increased and insulin decreased in shorn ewes, particularly, between 6 and 11 h after feeding. 6. It is concluded that shearing pregnant ewes at 8 weeks before lambing results in a chronic increase in energy requirements which are met by oxidizing body fat depots. The cold stress induced by shearing may also inhibit insulin secretion resulting in increased plasma glucose concentrations. The effects of shearing on energy metabolism in the ewe are discussed in relation to the nutrient supply for the developing fetus.

Metabolic profiles and progesterone cycles in first lactation dairy cows

This study investigated the ovarian function, metabolic profiles and fertility in first lactation Holstein-Friesian dairy cows (mean 305 day milk yield: 7417+/-191kg, n=37). Reproductive profiles obtained from milk progesterone analysis were categorized into normal (n=17) and four abnormal profiles (delayed ovulation, DOV1, n=9; DOV2, n=2; persistent corpus luteum, PCL1, n=6; PCL2, n=4; 1: immediately post-calving, 2: subsequent cycles). Fifty-five percent of cows had abnormal profiles with half of these being categorized as DOV1. Fertility of DOV1 and DOV2 cows was reduced whereas PCL1 and PCL2 cows had similar reproductive competence to normal profile cows. DOV1 animals had higher milk energy values, lower energy balances, lower dry matter intakes (DMI) and greater body weight and body condition score (BCS) losses post-calving than normal profile animals. DOV1 animals also had lower insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and higher betahydroxybutyrate (BHB) concentrations and tended to have the lower insulin and glucose concentrations in the pre-service period than normal profile cows. All PCL animals had vulval discharges postpartum. Despite this, the DMI, body weight and BCS changes, IGF-I concentrations and fertility of PCL1 animals was similar to normal profile cows. In conclusion, the high prevalence of delayed ovulation post-calving (DOV1) in primiparous high yielding cows lasted long enough (71+/-8.3 days) to have a detrimental impact on fertility and was associated with significant physiological changes. This study did not establish any detrimental effects of PCL profiles on fertility or production parameters.

Free-range village chickens on the Accra Plains, Ghana: their husbandry and productivity.

A cross-sectional[4pc] survey investigating husbandry and productivity of free-range village chickens was carried out in four administrative districts within 60km of Accra. Responses were provided by 101 men and 99 women. The mean (SD) household flock size was 28.7 (25.97) and the median was 20. The factors included in the final model investigating variance in flock size were sex of the respondent (p=0.011), administrative area (p=0.004), the numbers of members in the household (p=0.017) and the number of cattle, sheep and goats owned by the household (p=0.031). Chickens were owned by individual members of the household, but women and children were the predominant providers of care for chickens. All respondents described their chickens as scavengers that were provided with supplementary feed, and over 80% of respondents named maize as a supplementary food source. Approximately 50% of respondents claimed difficulty in providing supplementary feed, with the degree of difficulty varying between administrative areas (p<0.001). A majority of respondents (approximately 65%) claimed that their chickens laid 3–4 clutches of eggs per year. Over 70% of respondents estimated that each clutch contained 10–20 eggs, and approximately 70% of respondents estimated that 75% of the eggs hatched. Opinions on mortality varied, but 60% of men and 70% of women estimated that between 50% and 75% of both chicks and adult birds died each year. Approximately 80% of respondents named Newcastle disease as the most important health issue. The opportunities for and consequences of controlling Newcastle disease are discussed.

Lipid metabolism in shorn and unshorn pregnant sheep.

The aim of the present study was to determine how the long-term metabolic adaptations to winter shearing of the pregnant ewe result in significant changes in the rates of lipid mobilization and utilization of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) in comparison with unshorn controls. Continuous infusions of [1-14C]palmitic acid, [2-3H]glycerol and NaH14CO3 were used to measure whole-body lipid metabolism in fed (estimated metabolizable energy (ME) intake 9.54 MJ/d) and under-fed (estimated ME intake of 3 MJ/d), shorn and unshorn sheep over the final 4 weeks of pregnancy. Whole-body carbon dioxide, estimated heat production, total NEFA entry and oxidation rates were all significantly higher in fed shorn ewes compared with unshorn controls, even though there was no difference in the arterial plasma NEFA concentration. These differences may be mediated via an increase in the plasma concentrations of thyroid hormones in shorn animals. As a result of under-feeding any significant differences in lipid metabolism between shorn and unshorn groups were removed. In all sheep the mean total NEFA entry rate as measured using [1-14C]palmitic acid was 3.4 times the value obtained using [2-3H]glycerol. It is concluded that when sheep are fed on a diet from which no more than half the required ME for late pregnancy is obtained, then lipolysis of body fat depots occurs via the incomplete breakdown of adipose tissue triglycerides. This effect is significantly greater in the fed shorn pregnant ewe which exhibits higher entry and oxidation rates of NEFA.

Prevalence of subclinical mastitis and associated risk factors in smallholder dairy cows in Tanzania

A cross-sectional study was carried out on 200 randomly selected farms in each of the Iringa and Tanga regions of Tanzania to estimate the prevalence and risk factors for subclinical mastitis in dairy cows kept by smallholders. Subclinical mastitis was assessed using the California mastitis test (cmt), and by the bacteriological culture of 1500 milk samples collected from 434 clinically normal cows. The percentages of the cows (and quarters) with subclinical mastitis were 75·9 per cent (46·2 per cent) when assessed by the cmt and 43·8 per cent (24·3 per cent) when assessed by culture. Factors significantly associated with an increased risk of a cmt-positive quarter were Boran breed (odds radio [or]=3·51), a brought-in cow (rather than homebred) (or=2·39), peak milk yield, and age. The stripping method of hand milking was associated with a significantly lower prevalence of cmt-positive quarters (or=0·51). The cmt-positive cows were more likely to be culture positive (or=4·51), as were brought-in (or=2·10) and older cows.

A comparison of the nursing and suckling behaviour of group- and individually-housed sows and their litters

Nursing frequency, suckling duration and teat order were recorded in 12 ‘hybrid’ sows and their litters from parturition to weaning at day 42 post partum . Sows and their litters were moved from the farrowing quarters at day 20; half were housed as a group (G) and fed ad libitum with a boar present and the other half were housed individually (S) with no boar present and ration-fed to scale. Some differences occurred in behaviour from day 20. A significantly greater number of false nursing periods, significant synchronization of nursing periods, and a tendency for more long and short nursing intervals occurred in G than S sows and litters. The duration of the preliminary nosing phase and the total nursing period were significantly longer in S than G litters. Teat order scores, indicating consistency of piglet suckling position on the sow, tended to be greater in S than G litters, and there was a fall in the score for G litters in the weeks following grouping. This was associated with a check in live-weight gain. All G sows showed oestrus during lactation, on average 15 days after grouping. There was no incidence of lactational oestrus in the S sows which showed oestrus 5 days after weaning.

Intake, growth and meat quality of steers given diets based on varying proportions of maize silage and grass silage

Simmental × Holstein-Friesian steers were offered four forage diets. These comprised grass silage (G); proportionately 0·67 grass silage, proportionately 0·33 maize silage (GGM); 0·33 grass silage, 0·67 maize silage ( MMG); maize silage ( M) from 424 (s.d. = 11·5) kg to slaughter at a minimum weight of 560 kg. Forages were mixed and offered ad libitum. Steers were offered 2 kg of a concentrate daily, the concentrate being formulated such that all steers had similar crude protein intakes across dietary treatments. A sample of steers was slaughtered at the beginning of the experimental period to allow the calculation of the rate of gain of the carcass and its components. Carcass dissection of a sample of steers allowed the development of a prediction equation of carcass composition based on thoracic limb dissection of all carcasses. Forage dry matter intake and live-weight gain increased linearly as maize silage replaced grass silage in the forage mixture, resulting in improvements in food conversion ratio (all P = 0·001). Killing-out proportion increased with maize silage inclusion ( P < 0·001) but fat and conformation scores did not differ significantly between diets. However, increasing maize inclusion in the diet resulted in a greater weight ( P = 0·05) and proportion ( P = 0·008) of fat in the carcass, and significant increases in internal fat deposition. The inclusion of maize led to a progressive increase in the daily gains of carcass ( P < 0·001), and significant increases in the daily gains of both fat ( P < 0·001) and lean tissue ( P < 0·001). Fat colour was more yellow in cattle given diets G and GGM than diets MMG and M ( P < 0·001) and colour intensity was lower on diet M than the other three diets ( P < 0·001). There were no significant differences in any aspects of eating quality between diets. Therefore, maize silage has the potential to reduce the time taken for finishing beef animals to achieve slaughter weight with no apparent detrimental effects on subsequent meat quality.
