Abstract From the measurement of bubble chamber pictures with an HPD, values for the bubble density of the tracks are obtained that allow separation of protons and pions up to moments of 1.8 GeV/c. These ionization measurements form together with a number of other tests the basis of a reliable automatic decision system which is now used in the analysis of bubble chamber pictures in the Zeeman-Laboratorium.
