This paper analyses melodrama as a theatre genre, its contents and structure, its relation with the audience and with the emotions that it stirs. It casts light on the connections between melodrama and kitsch, in order to attempt an aesthetic categorization.

Sublime giocatore e guastafeste: una lettura de "Il nipote di Rameau"

Il gioco non viene distrutto da colui che bara, ma da chi denuncia l’assurdita delle regole e la loro natura puramente convenzionale. Un’inedita lettura del Nipote di Rameau di Diderot mette in evidenza il gioco della pantomima quale sinonimo di sottomissione alle regole sociali e prima ancora ai bisogni. E il modo di stare in societa, di conquistare un ruolo, tanto piu falso quanto piu lo sforzo della mimica ha il suo effetto. Prendere posizione non significa affatto affermare se stessi, le proprie idee; e adeguarsi ai bisogni e alle necessita di una societa che rende schiavi. Rameau e un abilissimo giocatore, il migliore fino a quando non decide di mettere in ridicolo le regole del gioco che sta interpretando e chi le ha inventate: i nuovi borghesi.

Innumerevoli sono le riscritture, gli adattamenti e le riprese della prima tragedia tebana di Sofocle e altrettanto innumerevoli sono gli studi consacrati alla storia di quest’opera e all’analisi del suo contesto, della sua trama e dei suoi personaggi: dall’analisi del sottotesto politico veicolato dalle differenti rielaborazioni del mito nell’ambito specifico di un genere letterario e di una determinata epoca, a studi di carattere letterario e filologico che affrontano le sue numerose declinazioni, a lavori che si interessano piu direttamente ai processi mitopoietici e alla ricezione della figura di Edipo nella storia della cultura occidentale. Da Aristotele a Girard, da Corneille a Testori, a Branciaroli, il presente volume fornisce un’importante introduzione alla storia del mito di Edipo, che non ha ancora esaurito la sua eccezionale potenza espressiva.

Il disgusto nel secolo dei Lumi

In this essay I try to answer two different questions: ‘how can we define disgust?’ and ‘which kind of relationship is there between taste and disgust?’. In order to give a definition of the notion of disgust I analyze the works of different modern philosophers of the 18th century. In the first part of my writing I support the idea that disgust is strictly connected to the sense of smell. Taking into account this consideration and the idea that aesthetic feeling is never a mere pleasure of sense, I then make a distinction between feeling and emotion. This distinction allows me to say that disgust is always an emotion, and it is never connected to a judgment of taste. Within the experience of disgust, the distance and the disinterest that aesthetics requires are nullified: both in reality and in works of art disgust can never be mixed with pleasure. On this basis, I analyze the connection between disgust and hunger, as discussed by Diderot and Lessing, sympathy and animals. Ultimately, I can state that disgust can never be mixed with pleasure, and it can never find a place in the judgment of taste. Disgust isn’t opposed to beauty, but it marks its limits.

A reflection about the risks and the challenges that involve the aesthetics as discipline. A discipline that has a history, a specific object and that shares with philosophy the prerogative of its uselessness. A discipline that needs a new formulation (not a new foundation): a discipline that “gets his hands dirty”, that tackles the world, the perception, the emotions and the most controversial aesthetic categories.
