The differential and total cross sections for the d+p->3He+eta reaction have been measured in a high precision high statistics COSY-ANKE experiment near threshold using a continuous beam energy ramp up to an excess energy Q of 11.3 MeV with essentially 100% acceptance. The kinematics allowed the mean value of Q to be determined to about 9 keV. Evidence is found for the effects of higher partial waves for Q>4 MeV. The very rapid rise of the total cross section to its maximum value within 0.5 MeV of threshold implies a very large eta-3He scattering length and hence the presence of a quasi-bound state extremely close to threshold.

Abstract The observed variation of the total cross section for the d p → He 3 η reaction near threshold means that the magnitude of the s-wave amplitude falls very rapidly with the η centre-of-mass momentum. It is shown here that recent measurements of the momentum dependence of the angular distribution imply a strong variation also in the phase of this amplitude. Such a behaviour is that expected from a quasi-bound or virtual η He 3 state. The interpretation can be investigated further through measurements of the deuteron or proton analysing powers and/or spin-correlations.

The differential and total cross sections for the dp -> He-3 eta reaction have been measured at COSY-ANKE at excess energies of 19.5, 39.4, and 59.4 MeV over the full angular range. The results are in line with trends apparent from the detailed near-threshold studies and also largely agree with those from CELSIUS, though the present data have much better angular coverage near the forward and backward directions, thus allowing firmer conclusions to be drawn. While at 19.5 MeV the results can be described in terms of s- and p-wave production, by 59.4 MeV higher partial waves are required. Including the 19.5 MeV point together with the near-threshold data in a global s- and p-wave fit gives a poorer overall description of the data though the position of the pole in the eta He-3 scattering amplitude, corresponding to the quasibound or virtual state, is hardly changed.

We discuss polarizing a proton beam in a storage ring, either by selective removal or by spin flip of the stored ions. Prompted by recent, conflicting calculations, we have carried out a measurement of the spin-flip cross section in low-energy electron–proton scattering. The experiment uses the cooling electron beam at COSY as an electron target. The measured cross sections are too small for making spin flip a viable tool in polarizing a stored beam. This invalidates a recent proposal to use co-moving polarized positrons to polarize a stored antiproton beam.

charge-exchange reaction have been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY storage ring. Using deuteron beams with energies 1.2, 1.6, 1.8, and 2.27GeV, data were obtained for small momentum transfers to a {pp}s system with low excitation energy. The results at the three lower energies are consistent with impulse approximation predictions based upon the current knowledge of the neutron-proton amplitudes. However, at 2.27GeV, where these amplitudes are far more uncertain, agreement requires a reduction in the overall double-spin-flip contribution, with an especially significant effect in the longitudinal direction. These conclusions are supported by measurements of the deuteron-proton spin-correlation parameters Cx,x and Cy,y that were carried out in the
