System architecture and interactivity model for mobile TV applications

M. Mohsin Saleemi; Jerker Björkqvist; Johan Lilius

Interactive services and applications for Mobile TV are considered to be one of the promising concepts that offer new opportunities for mass media, mobile and broadcast industry. This article explores the concepts of interactivity, interactive applications and system architecture aspects in interactive mobile TV. It investigates demands and constraints for the software platform of mobile TV, suggests possible solutions for them and proposes prototype software architecture for mobile TV based on this investigation and proposed solutions. Interactivity model for the interactive mobile TV applications is proposed that facilitate the evaluation of these applications to prospect the terminal and server sides requirements. This model has significance because it specifies the overall image of mobile interactive system that will be helpful for defining common application framework based on the users perception.

Exploiting smart spaces for interactive TV applications development

M. Mohsin Saleemi; Johan Lilius

The integration of semantic technologies and TV services is a substantial innovation to improve the services to users in an environment that is extended beyond the fixed home environment. But currently, this integration is mainly limited to provide personalized recommendation services and systems by matching user static preferences. Designing and development of interactive TV (iTV) applications using semantic technologies are not realized yet. In this work, we explore the potential of introduction semantic technologies and smart spaces in design and development of iTV applications. We use an example scenario to show how future iTV applications include the mesh-up of information from different sources. We proposed a methodology and show how ontology-driven approach can help to design and develop these iTV applications. We demonstrate the suitability of our ontology-driven application development tools and rule-based approach for the development of highly dynamic context-aware iTV applications. The integration of semantic technologies and TV services is a substantial innovation to improve the services to users in an environment that is extended beyond the fixed home environment. Interactive applications for mobile TV

M. Mohsin Saleemi; Johan Lilius

This paper explores the concepts of interactive applications, their usability and system architectural aspects in interactive mobile TV. The paper evaluates application scenarios for different interactive applications that can be supported by future Mobile TV. These application scenarios has significance because they specify overall image of mobile interactive system that will be helpful for defining common application framework based on the users perception. We conclude the paper by providing the directions for further research in the emerging area of interactive mobile TV applications.

Programming biomedical smart space applications with BioImageXD and PythonRules

Natalia Díaz Rodríguez; Pasi Kankaanpää; M. Mohsin Saleemi; Johan Lilius; Ivan Porres

In biomedical sciences new and increasingly complex technologies are constantly being introduced, and to facilitate new scientific discoveries they need to be able to adapt to current demands and provide seamless functionality. However, the interoperability of devices, tools and data is not always simple, and is often a bottleneck in bioimaging. Tools that ease the integration of diverse technologies could amplify functionality and performance considerably. BioImageXD software is presented as a use case. We propose a semantic-based approach and PythonRules to increase programming productivity in heterogeneous spaces through adaptable and scalable ontology-based development of Smart Space applications.

Content scheduling in multimedia interactive mobile games

M. Mohsin Saleemi; Kristian Nybom; Johan Lilius; Jerker Björkqvist

In this paper, we study how to implement interactive multimedia services using a DVB-H broadcast channel combined with a point-to-point channel, such as 3G or GPRS. We study the problem in the context of a location-based interactive mobile game. The technical challenge is to schedule the sending of data over the broadcast channel while maintaining Quality-of-Service, that is, sending the right data to the right user at the right time to provide a seamless interactive experience. We explore design issues and problems related to the scheduling of content in the game, present a usecase study to describe scheduling problems and propose a content scheduling algorithm to solve these problems. Moreover, we provide a simulation of the system and the experimental results to show how different game parameters influence the in-time delivery of the multimedia content to the players. We conclude that most of the problems involved with our approach can be expressed as the problem of defining delivery deadlines for a scheduling algorithm.
