Stool samples of 157 patients with AIDS, living in the county of Sao Paulo, were submitted to several techniques in the search for Cryptosporidium sp.. Among the various techniques tested for slide preparation (direct smear, spontaneous sedimentation method, and formol-ether concentration), the latter, formol-ether concentration, offered the best results, clearly outdoing all the others. Nineteen samples out of 157 prepared by this technique, after dyeing by the Kinyoun method or by carbol fuchsin dimethyl sulfoxide, were found to be positive for Cryptosporidium sp..

A comparative study on the occurrence of Strongyloides stercoralis larvae in 554 patients with AIDS and in 142 patients suffering from infectious diseases other than AIDS was conducted during the period from January 1987 to December 1988. The two groups was constituted by male individuals in-patients at Emilio Ribas Hospital - Sao Paulo. Faeces samples from 696 patients were submitted to spontaneous sedimentation method and Rugai method. The data obtained from the present investigation demonstrated a similar prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis in both groups (p > 0.05) indicating no significant statistical differences.

Can human beings get tuberculosis from the milk taken from cows infected with tuberculosis? Are the diagnosis and control of cattle tuberculosis effective for the protection of human populations? Questions such as these were the main concern of doctors from Sao Paulo at the beginning of the twentieth century. The present study tried to recover elements from the polemic that took place in Sao Paulo, in order to encourage the coming up of complementary facts about such matter. The article presents some indicators of confronting positions: on one hand, the goal of intensifying the control of tuberculosis among the cattle; on the other hand, the attempt not to bring up any loss to national cattle raisers through the demand of additional precaution measures, which would affect the production and distribution of their products. Medical publications kept records of the interventions, which have allowed the author to identify the first position as the stronger one, which has brought up relevant consequences for the sanitary food control.

The authors discuss a case of human leptospirosis, caused by Leptospira canicola, having the etiological agent been isolated by hemoculture on the fifth day of Clinical evolution. The diseases chief manifestations were fever and intense headache, besides myalgia and repeated vomiting. Symptoms appeared suddenly; while signs of meningeal involvement were lacking, there were indications of renal implications. Jaundice has not been observed during the course of the disease and the cure was attained within a reasonably short time. The authors stress this as the first Brazilian case where the responsible spirachaeta-precisely Leptospira canicola - could be isolated and duly identifield.

Through the intraperitoneal inoculation in mice the authors were able to show the presence of Toxoplasma gondii in the spittle of 12 (60%) bearers of toxoplasmosis. The total number of studied patients was twenty. This study represents a complement of a previous and preliminary one on the same subjetc. The presence of the parasite in the saliva is stressed because of its significance in the transmission of the disease.
