Dense medium cyclones are designed to partition coal particles based on particle density with the cut density adjusted by adding a finely dispersed heavy medium to the feed and adjusting the feed medium concentration. In a typical DMC, illustrated in Figure 1, a mixture of medium and raw coal enters tangentially near the top of the cylindrical section, thus forming a strong swirling flow.
