Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is one of the most frequent and life-threatening complications of controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH). OHSS is characterized by increased capillary permeability and resulting fluid shifts into the abdominal cavity that is in large part mediated by the overexpression of vascular endothelial factor (VEGF) in the overstimulated ovary.
