Degradation of Glyphosate in Excised Leaves of Tobacco and Sugar Beet

M. Stock; Margit Hieke; Reinhard A. Weidhase; Horst Robert Schütte

Summary Leaves of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) were treated with glyphosate [14C]-labelled in positions C1, C2 or C3 for investigation of biodegradation of this herbicide in higher plants. After treatment for 48 hours radioactivity was found as [14C]CO2 in the soluble fraction (e.g. undegraded glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid) and in non-extractable material (cell wall constituents, proteins etc.). The results indicate metabolic capacity of leaves to detoxify glyphosate by decarboxylation.

Abstract Mature fruits from apple trees contain residual amounts of radiolabel derived from soil-ap- plied [3,5-14C]amitrole. This report deals with characterization of the soluble part of this radioactivity. By GC/MS of suitable derivatives 3-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-2-aminopropionic acid was identified as a new metabolite of amitrole. Significant parts of radiolabel were incorporated into genuine plant products, indicating liberation of 14CO2 from the applied substance followed by reassimilation. Possible pathways of metabolism of amitrole within the system soil/apple tree are discussed.

Bernd Schneider; A. Kolbe; M. Stock; A. Bernasch

With some examples from the Isotopic Laboratory of the Institute of Plant Biochemistry Halle the possibilities and approaches of syntheses of agrochemicals and intermediates labelled with carbon-14 and tritium as well as their use to study the metabolism and behaviour in plant systems and in soils are discussed. Original references are included and related reviews in this field are cited.
