Prácticas funerarias durante el neolítico. Los enterramientos infantiles en el noreste de la Península Ibérica

Juan Francisco Gibaja; Tona Majó; Philippe Chambon; Jordi Ruiz; Mª Eulàlia Subirà

The Neolithic funeral record from Catalonia is particularly rich. At the beginning of the 20th century, P. Bosch Gimpera categorized the Catalonian Middle Neolithic as the “Sepulcros de Fosa” (pit burials) Culture, and this appellation is still in use. Within the framework of this monographic volume, this paper focus on the infantile burials, not only on its anthropological aspects, but also on other relevant information such as the grave goods associated to the reviewed burials, or the chronology of the funeral contexts established from the absolute dates available.

Some of the analyses presented in this paper were carried out within the project: “Aproximacion a las primeras comunidades neoliticas del NE peninsular a traves de sus practicas funerarias” (HAR2011-23149), “Aproximacion a las primeras comunidades neoliticas del Mediterraneo nordoccidental: construyendo respuesta desde los analisis paleoantropologicos y geneticos” (HAR2015-67323-C2-1-P y HAR2015-67323-C2-2-P), and “La difusion del neolitico en el Mediterraneo centro-occidental: agricultura, innovaciones tecnologicas y carbono 14” (HAR2016-75201-P) funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness of the Spanish Government. This project was conducted thanks to the collaboration and the agreement between the Mila i Fontanals Institution (Spanish National Research Council), the National Accelerator Centre (CNA) and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). We also would like to thank the assistance of the Department of Archaeology of the Catalan Government and the various museums that we visited to study the materials deposited from Bobila Madurell-Can Gambus necropolis (Museum of History of Sabadell, Barcelona Archaeological Museum, and the History Museum of Catalonia). This work has also been possible thanks to a predoctoral fellowship (FI-DGR2014) enjoyed byMs. BertaMorell and funded by the Catalan Government. We would also like to thank Mr. Jordi Sala for his willingness to help in some formatting issues during the drafting of this paper.
