Implementing gamification techniques into university study path - A case study

Maciej Laskowski

This article describes an attempt to check whether gamification is applicable to different courses in higher education and what are the results of such application. An experiment (involving over 100 students of computer science at Lublin University of Technology) implementing some of the gamification techniques into two different courses - software engineering and service-oriented architecture - was performed during two academic years 2011/2012 and 2012/2013. This article provides the description of the experiment and comparative analysis of its results in both gamified and non-gamified (control) groups.

The paper presents a case study of GUI quality improvement procedure. The procedure was used during development of GUI for Sale Force Automation (SFA) application as a part of ERP system. The paper outlines: the used methodology, GUI evaluation process, the SFA application description as well as the most important remarks concerning GUI. Moreover, the general recommendation and conclusions are listed.

Automation of Colorblindness Detection in Computer-Based Screening Test

Maciej Laskowski

Despite popular belief, color vision disorders do have an impact on the life of the persons affected, on both professional and private, everyday level. It is important to be aware of the possessed disorder, as in severe cases colorblindness may even endanger one’s life, as e.g. protanopes may perceive red traffic lights as extinguished.

USING CUSTOMIZED PSEUDOISOCHROMATIC PLATES FOR DETECTING CHOSEN FORMS OF DICHROMACY

Maciej Laskowski

Pseudoisochromatic plates have been used for detecting certain types of colourblindness (especially protanopia and deutanopia) for almost a century. Nowadays, due to its simplicity and relatively low examination cost, this method is widely used throughout the world. On the other hand, it is often criticized because of potential ambiguity and inaccessibility for certain groups of patients. This paper covers the analysis of different versions of currently used pseudoisochromatic plates. A tool for generating customized plates for detecting different types of dichromacy in certain user groups is also presented. Colour vision disorder may prevent a person from engaging in certain occupations, especially when colour recognition is important either for safety or essential for the work itself. Being aware of having colour vision disorder is important not only for people with professions connected with colour-based signals. Pseudoisochromatic plates – types and usage, pros and cons of the described method, proposal of the new diagnostic method – generating customized pseudoisochromatic plates, results of the preliminary research are presented in the paper.

Algorithm for Colorblindness Detection Sets Generation

Maciej Laskowski

Currently there are numerous methods for detecting colorblindness. They differ in many aspects, e.g. the quality and accuracy of diagnosis, the spectrum of colors used during test or the ability of being reproduced on a mass scale. However, there is one thing that those methods do have in common – they are based on predefined, limited sets of color elements.
