C. Martin Wilbur, George Sansom Professor Emeritus of Chinese History at Columbia University, died in Haverford, Pennsylvania, on June 18, 1997. For more than half a century Wilbur played a major role in shaping our understanding of twentieth-century China, through his writings, as a mentor to younger scholars, and as a steadfast friend and colleague. He continued in all these roles until leukemia claimed him at eighty-nine.
