Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to subject the potential of Internet of Things (IoT) technology for libraries in terms of the possible scope and usage forms of this technology in public and academic library services. Design/methodology/approach – Based on analysis of the subject literature, the main areas of IoT applications in commercial institutions were identified, then an analysis of Library and Information Science English-language literature from the years 2010 to 2015 was conducted in order to create a profile of modern library services. The range of activities of commercial and non-commercial institutions were compared to ascertain if areas in which commercial entities using or planning to use IoT could also be an inspiration for libraries. In this way, a theoretical model of IoT use in library activities was developed. Findings – The research showed that IoT technology might have the potential to be used in library services and other activities, similar to how it is implemented in the comme...

Deposition of 226Ra from water on nylon was investigated. Measurements performed for different pH and different radium concentrations in the water gave similar absolute activities deposited on the foil surface. Obtained results were used to estimate the amount of 226Ra plated-out on the nylon scintillator vessel in the solar neutrino experiment BOREXINO during filling of the detector. Another problem studied in the frame of BOREXINO was the removal of 210Pb from its organic liquid scintillator by applying distillation and water extraction. After several tests had been performed for both methods it was found that after the water extraction the initial lead content in the scintillator sample was reduced only accordingly to the ratio of the volumes of the applied liquids (simple dilution). In contrast to this, distillation was very effective providing in the best case a 210Pb reduction factor higher than 100. Removal efficiencies of the long-lived 222Rn daughters during etching from surfaces of standard and high purity germanium were investigated in the frame of the GERDA experiment, which aims to search for neutrino-less double beta decay of 76Ge. The standard etching procedure of Canberra used during production of high purity n-type germanium diodes was applied to germanium discs, which had been exposed earlier to a strong 222Rn source for its progenies deposition. In contrast to copper and stainless steel, 210Pb, 210Bi and 210Po was removed from germanium very efficiently. An evidence of a reverse process was also observed—the isotopes were transferred from the etchant to the clean germanium surface.

The subject of this article is the use of augmented reality technology in library and information science education. The aim is to determine the scope and potential uses of augmented reality in the education of information professionals. In order to determine the scope and forms of potential use of AR technology in LIS education a two-step analysis was conducted. The first stage was the in-depth analysis of LIS training programs offered by academic centers in Poland, including 8 programs (4 bachelor degree and 4 master degree). In this way, more than 350 learning outcomes were analyzed and grouped according to the frequency of occurrence. During the second stage of the study a list of the most important learning outcomes was compared with a list of skill areas that AR technology helps to develop, in order to formulate conclusions according to the potential use of AR in LIS education. Summarizing the results of the study, it can be concluded that AR technology is a useful teaching tool which enables students to achieve improved learning outcomes in the practical skills needed by librarians, as well as the personal and social competencies relevant to labor market needs.

W pierwszym etapie przeprowadzonych badan posluzono sie metodą analizy i krytyki piśmiennictwa, dokonując systematycznego przeglądu literatury przedmiotu publikowanej w latach 2000–2015 w jezyku polskim i angielskim, celem opracowania teoretycznego modelu kompetencji i roli wspolczesnego wydawcy. Nastepnie opracowany model porownano z wynikami badan ankietowych przeprowadzonych w środowisku polskich wydawcow literatury pieknej i publikacji naukowych. W rezultacie sformulowano wnioski dotyczące zakresu i postaci zmian w sposobach prowadzenia dzialalności wydawniczej, jakie zaszly pod wplywem obecności nowych form medialnych i sposobow upowszechniania treści na rynku ksiązki.

Purpose The subject of this paper is the application of holograms in cultural institutions. The purpose of this paper is to define the potential areas of hologram use in libraries, particularly in education and promotion, and also in services. Design/methodology/approach The method of analysis and criticism of literature was used. Based on a search conducted through Google Scholar for the 2006-2016 period, the current state of research on the use of holograms in cultural institutions was established. Subsequently, in order to find examples of hologram use in libraries, museums, galleries, and social organizations, an established set of queries was used to systematically search network resources using global search engines and metasearch engines. The initial list of results was narrowed down to the most relevant. On the basis of the above fact, the main areas of hologram use in cultural institutions were defined and examples of best practices were selected according to chosen criteria. The comparative method then was used to determine potential areas of application of holographic techniques in libraries. Finally, SWOT analysis – the situational analysis method known to management sciences – was used to determine opportunities and threats related to the use of holograms in cultural institutions. Findings Holograms have broad potential use in libraries that is even broader than initially assumed because they are not limited to education, promotion and services, and can also be used in documentation, research and exhibitions. The use of holograms can bring many benefits, but it is also associated with certain risks that need to be considered. Practical implications The results can be widely used in practice as a framework for the implementation of holographic techniques in libraries. Social implications The paper can help initiate debate on the opportunities and risks of using holograms in cultural institutions. Originality/value The issue of the use of holograms has not yet been widely discussed in library and information science scientific journals.

The subject of the article are new methods of reading promotion that are carried outside of the library, in the urban space, but often by librarians or in cooperation with them. The aim is to make a systematic review of the new forms of promotion, such as: street art, flash mob, performance, field games and more. Special attention is paid to the concept of ambient advertising, citing examples of its use in the promotion of films and video games, and presenting the potential for its promotion of reading. The method of analysis and criticism of literature, as well as analysis of web pages, was made. Papers published in top librarian journals, in Polish and English, between 2010–2015, were taken into account. Supplementary analysis of the network resources was made considering the largest Polish and foreign public libraries websites and librarians blogs. As a result, new methods of reading promotion in public space were discussed and typology was created according to established criteria.

Zastosowano metode analizy i krytyki piśmiennictwa, analizie poddając polskie prace z zakresu teorii i metodologii nauki o ksiązce, wydane w latach 1975–2010.
