Noor Ezan Abdullah; Athirah A. Rahim; Hadzli Hashim; Mahanijah Md Kamal

This paper presents about classification of rubber tree leaf diseases through automation and utilizing primary RGB color model. Several rubber tree leaf diseases are been studied for digital RGB color extraction where three sets of rubber tree leaf diseases image are digitally captured under standard and control environment. The identified regions of interest (ROI) of these diseases images are then processed to quantify the normalized indices from the RGB color distribution. This system involved the process of image classification by using artificial neural network where 600 samples were used as training while another 200 samples were for testing. The optimized ANN model in this work has two method which based only on the dominant pixel RGB (mean) and applying principle component analysis (PCA) on the pixel gradation values of each image. The optimized model was evaluated and validated through analysis of the performance indicators. Findings in this work have shown that both models have produced about 70% in diagnostic accuracy with more than 80% achievement for sensitivity. However, model with the applied PCA has lower network size.

Application of PID controller in controlling refrigerator temperature

Noor Hayatee Abdul Hamid; Mahanijah Md Kamal; Faieza Hanum Yahaya

This paper presents the comparison of performances between a PID temperature controller and a conventional on-off temperature controller for home-applied refrigerator. A new PID temperature controller was designed to replace the conventional on-off temperature controller to maintain the inner temperature of a refrigerator. Both temperature controllers of the conventional system and the PID were designed and evaluated using MATLAB Simulink software. The simulation shows that the PID controller was found to be more consistent and effective in maintaining the inner temperature of the refrigerator despite rapid changes in the outer temperature, than the conventional on-off controller. The both simulation results provide full graphical development which is analyzed and have been compared. The effectiveness of the PID control system and its ability to maintain the inner temperature of the refrigerator consistently than the conventional on-off controller is shown.

Water temperature using fuzzy logic

Ahmad Johan Mahbob; Mahanijah Md Kamal; Faieza Hanum Yahaya

This paper describes the use of fuzzy logic to control the temperature of water. As temperature is concerned, a lot of systems such as electronic, mechanical and biological are effected by temperature. This project concentrate on the software development done in the Fuzzy Tech Precompiler. In this process, temperature and level sensor is used as the input to the system. The signals for both of this inputs are taken from the level sensor and the temperature sensor respectively. The output of this controller is the heater, where it will heat the water to the desired temperature. There are two heaters that will be used in this system to support the various conditions. The software that is used, is the Fuzzy Tech Pre-compiler, where the If-Then rules and the membership function are designed.

Controller design for servo motor

Mahanijah Md Kamal; Nasirah Mamat

The objective of this paper is to design a controller for servo motor in discrete-time systems. The effect of sampling time on the proposed design will further discussed. Real-time data gained from the experimental is used to obtain the transfer function to design the PID controller. In order to get the optimal value of PID controller, ARX model structure was implemented. The effectiveness of the design is validated using MATLAB/Simulink. From the results obtained, it shows that the output for PID controller will gives the best performance of 87.79% at 55 ms sampling time.

This paper presents the results of a research that was conducted to evaluate whether the curriculum and syllabus of a new engineering program will produce graduates that will fulfill the needs of the industry in Malaysia. The new four year Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (Instrumentation) degree program (EE230) that was evaluated in a survey presented herewith is offered by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University Teknologi Mara (UiTM). The results of the survey indicated that the program offers courses that are relevant to the Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Instrumentation and that the design of the curriculum and syllabus will produce engineering graduates as required by the industry.

Supervised Learning of ANN for Plaque Lesion Discrimination Based on Chromatic Color Indices

Mahanijah Md Kamal; Hadzli Hashim; N. Ishak; Arsmah Ibrahim

This paper presents about recognizing selected skin lesions through automation diagnosis system as an aid for dermatologist. Previous work has shown that analyzing psoriasis lesion digital images using YCbCr color model is feasible. This is because human skin images if digitally quantified operates better on the chrominance plane rather than the normal RGB. The statistical outcomes from the previous work have given valuable information about discrimination of plaque from the other psoriasis lesions. This research will use the above information in the designing of an automation diagnosis model for plaque discrimination. YCbCr mean gradation color indices representing cropped images of psoriasis lesion are used to train 3 layer perceptron artificial neural networks (ANN). Backpropagation supervised learning of the layer networks are optimized by observing the performance indicators regularly applied in medical research. In this study the skin lesion classification is using YCbCr reflectance indices for psoriasis lesion that focused on guttate, plaque and erythroderma. In this work, components of YCbCr for differential method is applied to the input of ANN model with 400 samples used for training while 200 samples is for testing.

IoT (Internet of Things) is an emerging trend in the market and smart appliances are a subset of IoT. The IoT helps integrate digital and wireless technologies in home or kitchen appliances. Furthermore, M2M (Machine to Machine) communication is likely to create a key opportunity in the smart appliances market. Smart appliances are the next generation of home appliances that have the ability to receive, interpret, and act on a signal received from a user. This paper is a demonstration of designing a multipurpose remotely controlled system for electrical household appliances. The project simulation design is carried out by Hardware Description Language (HDL) programming.

Heat sink design of Thermoelectric Module for cooling system

Muhamad Arshad Mohd Monel; Mahanijah Md Kamal; Muhamad Hishamuddin Omar

Normally the cooling box used for the delivery of a frozen foods cannot preserved the food temperature for a long time and may cause the food quality deteriorated. This work focuses on the mechanism on how to preserve food and to investigate the current requirements to provide optimum thermoelectric cooler for temperature range between 5°C to 15°C. The design process focuses on designing a combination of heat sink and motor fan on a thermoelectric cooler. These two devices determined the changes in the temperature range inside the cooler box. This cooling system used Thermoelectric Module (TEM) as an actuator and also as the cooling element in the cooling system. Here, the foods are kept inside within the range of desired temperature setting. The temperature sensor measures the temperature and sends the data to the Arduino microcontroller. The Arduino gives the signal based on the set point and regulate the desired temperature inside the refrigeration system whereas the relay module was used as an ON-OFF controller to control the desired temperature setting. Preliminary result showed that thermoelectric cooler can produce the desired temperature range with the help of heat sink and DC fan as part of the cooling element in the system.

This paper presents the findings of Visions System performance for the detection of White root disease infection based on capacitance properties. A number of 100 latex samples representing healthy and white root infected rubber tree is tested for its capacitance value using Prototype Console Unit (PCU) developed. An optimized model for ANN using Levenberg Marquardt was designed. It is found that the hidden layer size of neuron 2 gave the best optimized ANN model with 77% sensitivity, 88% specificity, 82.5% accuracy, and uses 5 numbers of connections. A vision system based on this optimized model is developed and has the performance of 78.34% total accuracy.
