Location based early disaster warning and evacuation system on mobile phones using OpenStreetMap

Khandaker Mustakimur Rahman; Tauhidul Alam; Mahfuzulhoq Chowdhury

Natural Disasters have threatened mankind since history started. Due to geographic position and climate change, Bangladesh is one of most vulnerable countries to natural disasters. The country also lacks effective disaster preparedness system to confront natural disasters. Timely disaster warning and evacuation guideline can save lives of the people. In addition, a tourist or a blind people may face difficulties in finding safe area or shelter place prior to the occurrence of natural disasters. For this reason, we have proposed a location based early disaster warning and evacuation system for both normal and blind people using OpenStreetMap (OSM). The system is implemented on android mobile phone because of the burgeoning growth of smart phones in Bangladesh. So, our system comprises a third-party server named Disaster Management Server (DMS), android device with our application installed on it and user. The local weather office updates the disaster (tsunami, cyclone or flood) data on DMS. Device user registers on Android Cloud to Device Messaging (C2DM) server to get automatic notification of upcoming disaster otherwise user gets manual notification. The user communicates with DMS to have updated data sending the current position obtained by GPS or network provider. The probable disaster affected area is determined by ray casting algorithm. When our application recognizes the user in probable disaster zone then application will disseminate visual and audio disaster warning and evacuation guideline including shortest path of shelter or safe zone on the map of the application. Evacuation progress is also tracked using DMS and national identification of user. The experimental result demonstrates the effectiveness of our system.

The frequency and intensity of disasters like tsunamis, seismic tremors, floods, volcanic eruptions, avalanches, storms, and so on in the last decade has grown alarmingly. Bangladesh is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, and it has failed to offer a productive disaster administration framework that can help victimized people in times of need, particularly during the salvage and alleviation stages. Thus, there is a need for a framework that may help in the productive procurement of supplies to disaster zones. The always-diminishing cost of mobile phones and wide system scope of cellular innovation has empowered cellular telephones to work even in remote areas. The Android operating system also expands its ubiquity among youngsters for its minimal effort and high effectiveness. Since the utilization of cell telephones in Bangladesh is broad, the outline of a disaster administration framework as a portable application is paramount. The usage of such a framework would be a helpful instrument for post-disaster administration. The application environment for the proposed framework is Googles Android operating system in light of the fact that it is the most prevalent portable working framework today. We outline both server side and client side interfaces for better disaster recovery operations. The proposed framework is useful for both disaster victims and the rescuers. The GPS of advanced mobile phones is utilized for discovering the area of the client, and is fit for sending their area directions to the server. The server corresponds with a legitimate database of the organization, and the organization distinguishes the current position of a disaster victim. Organizations included in post-disaster administration utilize Google Maps, which shows the position of disaster victims with an asked-for disaster severity number and his versatile number. The volunteers of the salvage group to pass on the message for making essential move. The server site classes the alleviation choice which originates from the victim and store into the database for further utilization. The proposed framework in this project may serve as a good starting point for a post disaster management system in Bangladesh.

Location based ATM locator system using OpenStreetMap

Rajib Chandra Das; Parijat Prashun Purohit; Tauhidul Alam; Mahfuzulhoq Chowdhury

Money transaction through ATM machine wherever we go has become phenomenon in our day-to-days activities as it is safe to keep a ATM card rather than keeping cash. When we need cash in any unknown area or during any emergency situation, we need to know about nearest ATM booth from where we can avail this opportunity. In addition, a tourist or new comer may face difficulty in having ATM help without this information. Hence, we have proposed a location based ATM locator system (LBALS) using OpenStreetMap, a growing open source digital map where ATM booths and fast tracks are mapped. Database contains detail information about all available ATM booths and fast tracks of different banks. It requires GPS supported android device with application installed on it for the user. Textual information are provided of nearest ATM booths or fast tracks from users current position when he requires the information. Some Markers indicate ATM booths or fast tracks on the map. Dijkstras algorithm has been applied to show the possible shortest path between user and an ATM booth. Haversine formula is also used to calculate perpendicular distance. Implemented LBALS is tested for some random locations in a specific region of our country.

Ahmed Imteaj; Mahfuzulhoq Chowdhury; Md. Arafin Mahamud

The heart of a city depends on its purification of air, cleanliness of the roads and highways and overall its surrounding environment. But if the condition disrupted, then the people live in the city have to pay for this. Different kinds of diseases spread out in an epidemic form and it is becoming tougher to lead a healthy life. However, people can ignore this condition by raising their hand to build up a healthy city. So we constructed a system for integrating the citizen and authority in a common platform and work in together to make the Dhaka city healthier. The system is an android based application where the user himself can contribute to clean his city, notify volunteer to come forward or can inform city corporation. The amenities of this application are - it ameliorates the user to detect nearby dustbins location with path, helps to see available volunteer on the map, notify them using google push service notification and assists them to submit a report to authorities if a problem arise.

Smart vehicle accident detection and alarming system using a smartphone

Adnan Bin Faiz; Ahmed Imteaj; Mahfuzulhoq Chowdhury

Vehicle accident is the paramount thread for the peoples life which causes a serious wound or even dead. The automotive companies have made lots of progress in alleviating this thread, but still the probability of detrimental effect due to an accident is not reduced. Infringement of spFieed is one of the elementary reasons for a vehicle accident. Therewithal, external pressure and change of tilt angle with road surface blameworthy for this mishap. As soon as the emergency service could divulge about an accident, the more the effect would be mitigated. For this purpose, we developed an Android based application that detects an accidental situation and sends emergency alert message to the nearest police station and health care center. This application is integrated with an external pressure sensor to extract the outward force of the vehicle body. It measures speed and change of tilt angle with GPS and accelerometer sensors respectively on Android phone. By checking conditions, this application also capable of reducing the rate of false alarm.

Technological advancements have flaunted a substantial maturation concerned with each and every field in the world and is regarded as a blessing for the human being. Technology succors to diminish our tribulation and makes our life more congenial. In his regards, we propounded an android based application named ‘Community Friend’ which aspiration is to collaborate with the society people in different manners. In this application, people can delineate on drug selling, food adulteration, different kinds of community problems like need of road construction, electricity or water problem, sexual harassment, early marriage etc. and the report will be dispatched to the proper authority. Therewithal, people can discover the nearby distressed center with distance through a map. Besides, the application has an attribute of audio section which comprised of different religious sermon and medical advice for motivating people from doing malfeasance.
