OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to verify the association between mood states with clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of women with fibromyalgia. METHODS: One hundred six participants answered the Sociodemographic and Clinical Questionnaire (QSDC) and the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS). The QSDC is composed of questions about personal and clinical aspects, while BRUMS evaluates mood state over six components: tension, depression, anger, vigor, fatigue and mental confusion. Data was treated with descriptive statistics and the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney test. RESULTS: The negative mood variables whore elevated, especially the tension, depression, fatigue and mental confusion, while the vigor was considered in low-level. It was also found that younger participants, who work, with a diagnosis of depression and particularly those having increased symptoms related to fibromyalgia had more depressed mood than their peers. CONCLUSION: Women with fibromyalgia had a trend toward depressed mood, and this feature is presented associated with sociodemographic and clinical factors.

This study aimed to translate and validate a Brazilian version of the Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire (SNAQ), checking its clarity and validity for the participants of the Cardiopulmonary and Metabolic Rehabilitation Program (CPMR). One hundred and forty-six subjects were interviewed: 79 males, mean age of 63 years (±10) and 67 women, mean age of 66 years (±11). Descriptive analysis was presented as mean, standard deviation and frequency. The internal consistency of the scale was assessed using Cronbachs alpha coefficient and factor analysis by the method of extraction of principal components analysis using Kaisers criteria (eigenvalues > 1). All questions of the instrument showed positive results regarding clarity. The questionnaire items presented factor loadings above 0.40, (ranging from 0.40 to 0.81). Except for the issue related to the amount of daily meals, all others showed high correlation with the total score of the Brazilian version. Regarding the analysis of internal consistency, the result of 0.61 was reached. In conclusion, the Brazilian Version of SNAQ proved to be valid for use in CPMR program participants, thus becoming an important tool in assessing the appetite of the Brazilian population.

Estágios de mudança de comportamento relacionados ao exercício físico em adolescentes

Maick da Silveira Viana; Alexandro Andrade

The objective of the present study was to analyze the stages of behavioral change (SBC) in physical exercise among adolescent from public schools in Florianopolis, SC, Brazil. The sample consisted of 400 adolescents (53.8% girls and 46.2% boys) aged 14 to 18 (mean age of 16.3 years for girls and 16.4 years for boys), who were randomly selected from state high schools operating in the municipality of Florianopolis. Associations between variables were analyzed using the chi-square test (α=0.05). The results showed that 67.6% of the students performed regularly some type of physical exercise (action and maintenance stages), whereas only 9.8% did not exercise or did not intend to exercise (pre-contemplation stage). Boys exercised more than girls since they were in more advanced SBC (p<0.000). Age, school year, or period of study was not significantly associated with EMC in the sample as a whole, but male students who studied in the morning were found to be more sedentary (p=0.050). The results showed that most students of the population perform some physical exercise. However, attention should be paid to a minority of students who showed a sedentary behavior, especially those who do not intend to exercise. The importance of SBC for more effective health intervention is highlighted since, even if a program does not render an individual physically active within a short period of time, positive long-term behavioral changes can be expected.

Ricardo Brandt; Maick da Silveira Viana; Luciana Segato; Alexandro Andrade

The sail demands from the athlete vast knowledge of hydrodynamic, meteorology, rules and tactics, beyond physical and psychological demands as concentration and attention. The aim of this study was, through a literature review, to investigate the attention and your implication in the practice of sail. Attention is a variable of great importance in the context of competitive sail, considered the necessary ability to a best performance. For the athlete to reach and maintain good levels of attention it is necessary that he establishes performance goals, mental routines and use “trigger words”. The attention is intimately linked with the characteristics of sail, and could be considered a basic cognitive capacity for sailors.

OBJECTIVE To investigate self-esteem, body image and depression in adolescents under different nutritional conditions. The study included 418 adolescents (14-18 years old). METHODOLOGY Four questionnaires were administered: Characterization; Child Depression Inventory; Self-esteem Scale, and Body Image Questionnaire. The nutritional conditions were classified using the Body Mass Index (BMI). RESULTS Boys had a higher prevalence of overweight or obesity, a lower depression and body dissatisfaction rate, and higher self-esteem than girls (p<0.001). Depression was negatively related to self-esteem (p<0.01), which also had a negative association with body dissatisfaction (p<0.01). Even though adolescents with superior nutritional conditions were more dissatisfied (p<0.001), the BMI was related to body dissatisfaction only in girls (p<0.01). Regarding the relation between depression and body dissatisfaction, it was negative for boys (p<0.01), but positive for girls (p<0.01). CONCLUSION Overweight or obese adolescents have higher body dissatisfaction. Depression and self-esteem are related to body image, and not to BMI, demonstrating that the subjectivity of adolescents must be assessed. The differences identified between boys and girls for these relations must be further investigated.

Juliana da Silva; Thais Silva Beltrame; Maick da Silveira Viana; Renata Capistrano; Annelise do Vale Pereira de Oliveira

In this study we aim at investigating the association of the feeling of self-efficacy with academic performance, learning difficulties, gender and age of children in the early grades of elementary school. The sample was composed of 406 children (56% girls), aged 7 to 10 years, enrolled in a school in the metropolitan area of Florianópolis/SC. The instruments used were the Academic Performance Test (TDE) and Sense of selfefficacy Assessment Guide (RASAE). Statistically significant association was found between self-efficacy and academic performance for all levels of school skills and those with the best performance had higher self-efficacy (p <0.001). Regarding the results between gender, girls were more self-efficacy than boys (p <0,05). Children of different age groups (7-8 and 9-10 years) had similar levels of self-efficacy. The results suggest that actions which target the increase of self-efficacy are directed especially to boys and groups with low academic performance. This produces impacts on the motivation and school learning.
