We present system integration requirements and provide a new framework to support the integration of 4G networks and services. This framework uses a policy based networking concept in order to provide the unified control in the oncoming 4G networks and services. We also provide an analysis of the candidate signaling protocols in this framework. Two approaches are described: i) the unified QoS, mobility, and security signaling and ii) the heterogeneous QoS, mobility, and security signaling. In addition, we introduce user, terminal, network and service profiles and management in order to provide a user centric approach and consider different user, terminal, network, and service constraints in order to better adapt the user service as well as the network configuration to these constraints. Finally, we give a short estimation on the composition of exchanged signaling data with respect to the aspired level of integration.

The theme of this article is a proposed global wireless communications environment - ubiquitous consumer wireless world - enabled through the strategic creation of International Telecommunication Union standards. Specifics include new consumer identity module cards, new network- independent and location-independent personal IPv6 addresses, new protocol and interface infrastructures underpinning trusted third-party authentication, authorization, and accounting services, and new consumer-oriented incoming call connection services.

This paper presents the generic concept of using cloud-based intelligent car parking services in smart cities as an important application of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm. This type of services will become an integral part of a generic IoT operational platform for smart cities due to its pure business-oriented features. A high-level view of the proposed middleware is outlined and the corresponding operational platform is illustrated. To demonstrate the provision of car parking services, based on the proposed middleware, a cloud-based intelligent car parking system for use within a university campus is described along with details of its design, implementation, and operation. A number of software solutions, including Kafka/Storm/Hbase clusters, OSGi web applications with distributed NoSQL, a rule engine, and mobile applications, are proposed to provide ‘best’ car parking service experience to mobile users, following the Always Best Connected and best Served (ABC&S) paradigm.

An explanation is given of the application of the complex Bessel function series approximation model of the memoryless amplitude and phase characteristics of nonlinear devices. Confusion had arisen because of the choice of a value of a parameter in the approximating expression. The practice had been to choose this simply as though it was just an arbitrary constant which scales the input, or as an optimizing parameter in the effort to get a best fit of the approximation to the measured data. By examining the derivation of the particular approximation, a determining and important link between this parameter and the desired operating dynamic range of the nonlinear characteristic being approximated is shown. How values for this parameter are calculated in terms of input overdrive relative to device saturation is also shown. In examining the origin of the approximating expressions, an alternative and simpler derivation to that given by J.C. Fuenzalida et al. (1973) is presented that is based on the work of M.J. Eric et al. (1972). >

‘Always Best Connected’ (ABC) is considered one of the main requirements for next generation networks. The ABC concept allows a person to have access to applications using the devices and network technologies that best suits his or her needs or profile at any time. Clearly, this requires the combination of a set of existing and new technologies, at all levels of the protocol stack, into one integrated system. In this paper, a considerable set of the technologies, that are expected to play a key role towards the ABC vision, are presented. Starting from a reference architecture, the paper describes the required enhancements at certain levels of a traditional protocol stack, as well as technologies for mobility and end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) support. The paper concludes with a case study that reveals the advantages of the ABC concept. The emerging 4G networks intend to provide a variety of adaptable services to mobile and nomadic users by using an integrated heterogeneous network infrastructure. The commonalities and differences among the various approaches in the integration of 4G systems and services are identified on the basis of an analysis of the research done by well-known international projects. Building on these and other ideas, the requirements for an integrated system and service 4G architecture are defined. Considerations and ideas discussed include AAA functions, network system management, end-to-end QoS negotiation and support, mobility management, adaptability and reconfigurability, support for multiple communication modes, ABC&S, service and access network advertisement, discovery and association, wireless billboard channel, and security and privacy challenges.

A percentage linearization (PL) and a percentage linearization area (PLA) are defined and proposed as two new measures of the degree of AM-to-AM linearization, achieved by a linearization scheme, of the saturating region of nonlinear high power amplifiers (HPAs). The measures are based on defining a HPA saturation power point which is very close to the asymptotic output saturation power (AOSP) line. Here the point where the first derivative of the AM-to-AM dB power characteristic drops to 0.1 is so defined. Employing the passage through a typical pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistor solid-state power amplifier (PHEMT SSPA) of an UWC-136 8-PSK signal, as a test signal, an introductory insight into the usefulness of these linearization measures is presented.

Based on the user-centric paradigm for next generation networks, this paper describes a ubiquitous mobile healthcare (uHealth) system based on the ISO/IEEE 11073 personal health data (PHD) standards (X73) and cloud computing techniques. A number of design issues associated with the system implementation are outlined. The system includes a middleware on the user side, providing a plug-and-play environment for heterogeneous wireless sensors and mobile terminals utilizing different communication protocols and a distributed “big data” processing subsystem in the cloud. The design and implementation of this system are envisaged as an efficient solution for the next generation of uHealth systems.

This paper proposes strategic innovations through NGN standardisation to enable the establishment of a consumer-centric business model (CBM) for wireless services. This leads to the evolution of a wireless environment, called here a ubiquitous consumer wireless world (UCWW). In view of the novelty of the concept, the paper focuses on developing the context and argument for the CBM, and the underpinning technological innovations - key new infrastructural entities and functionalities - required for its realisation. The technological innovations proposed may be evolutionary, but considering the potential social, economic and policy impact on wireless communications equipment, service providers and users, the effect may be described as revolutionary.
