The Athenian Quota-List of 421/0 B. C.

THE APPEARANCE of both Menekles and Prepis as first secretaries of the Athenian Council in the archonship of Aristion (421/0)1 offers a dilemma that has been variously resolved. Meritt thought that Prepis might have died in office, to be succeeded by Menekles,2 a suggestion criticized by McGregor.3 Pritchett noted the apparent contradiction of two first secretaries, but decided neither for the one nor for the other.4 The editors of ATL in 1949 restored the name of Prepis in the preamble of the quota-list of 421/0,1 influenced largely by Meritts argument in 19416 that the seventh line should be reconstructed on the analogy of the two neighbouring lists now dated in 422/1 and 416/5. But the analogy is suggestive rather than cogent, and the case for dating Prepis as first secretary in 422/1, leaving Menekles for 421/0, is based on much sounder evidence.
