Demographic Consequences of Suburbanization in Selected Towns in the Eastern Borderlands of Poland The aim of the article is to present some of the consequences of the suburbanization process in Poland, where said the process became relevant in the 1990s and continues to this day. The author focuses specifically on the demographic aspects of this phenomenon, i.e., the changes in population it has implied in urban and suburban areas, as well as the characteristics of the relevant demographic structures and natural increase that affect the territories in question. The results of the research pertain to three of the largest cities in the Lubelskie voivodship: Lublin, Chełm, and Zamość, spanning the years 1995 to 2007. An analysis of available statistical data on this period allows us to note substantial differences in some demographic indicators for cities on the one hand and their respective communes (gminas) on the other. Additionally, the data suggests that the population shifts and changes that occur in the region are the result of an interaction between suburbanization processes and the ongoing Second Demographic Transition, which takes place simultaneously.

ABSTRACT This paper presents a method of development concerning maps of changes in the population distribution in Poland after the Second World War (1946–2012). The phenomenon is presented by means of isolinear maps based of the population density index. The resulting maps illustrate the population distribution in intervals of approximately 10 years. Moreover, the changes themselves are presented in balance maps corresponding to periods between the selected dates. The maps highlight spatial changes in the population distribution in Poland. The key task was to develop a method of preparing maps providing an objective and comparable image of the population distribution. This was obtained by means of the isoline method with the application of a multipoint representation of administrative units (basic fields) differing in terms of area and shape. Comparability was also achieved through the appropriate preparation of standardised map legends (colour scales and isoline interval). The maps were prepared in scales of 1:8,000,000 (state maps) and 1:400,000 (change/balance maps).

Due to the socio-economic transformation, rural areas in Poland faced new difficulties and challenges. In this article, favorable and adverse factors for development of rural areas in the Lubelskie Voivodeship are presented (among others: unfavorable demographic conditions, low quality of human resources, peripheral localization, mono-functionality, location in the religious and cultural borderland). Taking into consideration all the factors mentioned above, areas with various functional specialization (functional areas) have been determined, e.g. with residential, tourism and recreation, service and agricultural functions.
