Malgorzata Ulewicz; Wladyslaw Walkowiak; Krystyna Brandt; Iwona Porwolik-Czomperlik

Competitive flotation of zinc(II) and cadmium(II) ions from dilute aqueous solutions by side-armed lariat ether-type derivatives of diphosphaza-16-crown-6 ethers in the presence of nonylphenol nonylethylene glycol ether as the non-ionic foaming agent has been investigated. The influence of the type of group attached to the PNP-lariat ether molecule on the selectivity and efficiency of Zn(II) and Cd(II) ion flotation is studied. An effect of alkali metal cations, i.e., Li+ and Na+, on Cd(II) ion-flotation removal is also reported. It was shown that the removal of Cd2+ increases with increase of pH values and decreases with alkali metal cations concentration increase in aqueous solutions. The correlation between selectivity coefficients of Cd(II)/Zn(II) and pH of aqueous solution as well as molar intrinsic volume and hydrophilic–lipophilic balance of studied ethers was found.

Supported Liquid (SLM) and Polymer Inclusion (PIM) Membranes Pertraction of Copper(II) from Aqueous Nitrate Solutions by 1-Hexyl-2-Methylimidazole

Malgorzata Ulewicz; Elzbieta Radzyminska-Lenarcik

The facilitated transport of Cu(II) ions from different aqueous nitrate source phases (c Me = 0.001 M, pH = 6.0) across supported (SLMs) and polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) doped with 1-hexyl-2-methylimidazole as ion carrier was reported. The membrane is characterized by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results show that Cu2+ can be separated very effectively from other transition metal cations as Zn2+, Co2+, and Ni2+ from different equimolar mixtures of these ions. The highest initial fluxes of Cu(II) were found for PIM, while lower values were observed for SLM. However, after taking into account the morphology of the membranes (porosity, tortuosity), the values of the initial flux of Cu(II) transport across PIM is less than that across SLM. The recovery factor of Cu2+ ions during transport across PIM from different mixtures of cations is above 91% after 24 hrs and above 76% during transport across SLM. Also, the stability of PIM and SLM doped with 1-hexyl-2-methylimidazole was confirmed in replicate experiments.

Selective Transport of Cu(II) across a Polymer Inclusion Membrane with 1-Alkylimidazole from Nitrate Solutions

Elzbieta Radzyminska-Lenarcik; Malgorzata Ulewicz

The selective transport of copper(II), zinc(II), cobalt(II), and nickel(II) ions from nitrate solutions across polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs), which consist of cellulose triacetate as polymeric support, o-nitrophenyl pentyl ether as plasticizer, and 1-alkylimidazole (alkyl from hexyl- to decyl) as ion carrier was reported. PIM was characterized by using atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique. The results show that Cu(II) can be separated very effectively from other transition metal cations as Zn(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) (at a concentration of 10−3 mol/dm3 each). Alkyl substituents at position 1 of the imidazole ring have been found to affect the hydrophobic properties and initial flux of the transported metal ions. The efficiency of separation of metal ions by 1-alkylimidazole followed the sequence: Cu(II) > Zn(II) > Co(II) > Ni(II). The highest selectivity coefficient for Cu(II) was found with 1-hexylimidazole and its 1 mol/dm3 solution in PIM. Separation of the ions was more effective for the nitrates(V) than for chlorides.

Application of Polymer and Supported Membranes with 1-Decyl-4-Methylimidazole for Pertraction of Transition Metal Ions

Malgorzata Ulewicz; Elzbieta Radzyminska-Lenarcik

The facilitated transport of Zn(II), Cd(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) ions from different aqueous chloride source phases (cMe = 0.001 mol/dm3, pH = 6.0) across supported (SLMs) and polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) doped with 1-decyl-4-methylimidazole as ion carrier was reported. The membrane is characterized by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results show that Zn(II) can be separated very effectively from other transition metal cations as Cd(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) from different equimolar mixtures of such ions. The higher initial fluxes for Zn(II) were found for PIM (3.62-4.10 μmol/m2.s), while the lower values were observed for SLM. However, after taking into account the morphology (porosity, tortuosity) of the membranes, the values of the initial flux of Zn(II) transport across the PIM are lower than those across the SLM. The recovery factor of Zn(II) ions during transport across PIM and SLM from different mixtures of cations is above 95% after 24 hrs. PIM containing 1-decyl-4-methylimidazole are stable for 120 hrs.

Paweł Maciejewski; Malgorzata Ulewicz; Waldemar Robak; Wladyslaw Walkowiak

The influence of aqueous solution pH on the flotation rate and flotation efficiency with lariat ethers possessing cavities from DB-13-C-4 to DB-22-C-7 and four different acidic groups (sulphonamide, sulphonic, carboxylic, phosphonic) was studied. The correlation between the maximal percent removal of mentioned cations, the initial concentration of lariat ether and the non-ionic foaming agent, and the pH of aqueous solution as well as molar intrinsic volume and Hydrophilic–Lipophilic Balance (HLB) of studied ethers was found.

The use of the steric effect of the carrier molecule in the polymer inclusion membranes for the separation of cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), and zinc(II) ions

Elzbieta Radzyminska-Lenarcik; Malgorzata Ulewicz

Abstract In this study, palladium-modified nickel foam substrate was applied to examine ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in 0.1 The transport of cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), and zinc(II) ions from chloride solutions across polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs), which 1-heptylimidazole (1̲) or 1-heptyl-2-methylimidazole (2̲) or 1-heptyl-4-methylimidazole (3̲) as the ion carrier was reported. The steric effect for carriers 2̲and 3̲decreases the transport of all ions except Cu(II). The initial fl uxes of metal ions transport across PIMs with the 1̲- 2̲decrease in the sequence: Cu(II) > Zn(II) > Co(II) > Ni(II), whereas for 3 they were Cu(II) > Zn(II) > Ni(II) > Co(II). The highest recovery values were obtained for Cu(II), this being 99 and 85% for carrier 1̲and 2̲, respectively. In both membranes the degree of deposition of the Zn(II) ions was comparable. Zn(II), Co(II) and Cd(II) ions, which form complexes with coordination numbers 4 and 6, are more easily recovered with the use of carriers 2̲and 3̲. Ni(II) ions, which form complexes with coordination number 6 only, practically remain in the feeding phase. PIMs with alkylimidazoles were characterized by non-contact atomic force microscopy.

Analysis of Changes in Thermomechanical Properties and Structure of Polyamide Modified with Fly Ash from Biomass Combustion

Adam Gnatowski; Malgorzata Ulewicz; Mateusz Chyra

Study of performance of polyamide with fly ash addition with different contents of filler was carried out. In this article studies were performed: dynamical mechanical properties, thermal properties and structure research. The profiles of changes in the value of storage modulus E′ and tangent of mechanical loss angle tgδ depend on the temperature and frequency of vibrations. The crystallinity degree was examined using DSC methodology whereas the structure was analysed by means of the optical microscope. The increase in the value of storage modulus versus temperature and vibration frequency for the samples with addition of filler and the increase in the crystallinity degree and polymer matrix with reduced addition of fly ash were observed. A reduction in size of the structural components was also found, particularly for the composites with filler content.Graphical Abstract
