Fiber and exercise in the treatment of obese adolescents

Manuel Peña; Jorge Bacallao; Lajos Barta; Manuel Amador; Francis E. Johnston

The changes in body weight, body fat, lean body mass, and the efficiency index were studied in a sample of 80 obese males and females undergoing four different treatments, using two treatment components: an increase in dietary fiber, and energy expenditure through exercise. In both sexes there was a significant effect of exercise upon body weight and an improvement in the efficiency index. There was also a significant interaction between fiber and exercise in girls, but not in boys. This suggests that the eventual effect of dietary fiber is heightened by exercise, as corroborated by significant differences in some of the groups.

This article advances theoretical and conceptual arguments to justify efforts to reduce chronic malnutrition as a basic component of any strategy for promoting health and development in countries with a high malnutrition prevalence. The arguments rest on four cardinal principles of contemporary social epidemiology, in whose framework reducing chronic malnutrition would be a key strategic component: the social determinants approach, the life course as the clinical-epidemiological paradigm, the concept of heredity and population health, and recognition of the family as a social determinant. Added to these are the close association between nutrition, health, and development, on the one hand, and the political significance of any strategy that makes the fight against chronic malnutrition the most visible focus of programmatic action.

Changes in Body Composition and Physical Fitness in Obese Children with Different Treatments

Manuel Peña; Jorge Bacallao

Regulation of body mass and body composition is dependent on energy intake, energy expenditure, and on the behaviour of many regulating mechanisms. The last factors are numerous, complex, and still not well understood. Indeed, the first two factors can be controlled and their combination seems to be the most advantageous way to reduce fat.
