Ditrichum gracile was recorded in the locality Samarske stijene in the Velika Kapela Mt for first time in Croatia. Ditrichum gracile occured within forests of common spruce belonging to the community Hyperico grisebachii - Piceetum on the forest floor, forming distinct patches of several square decimetres. The plants were of typical appearance, medium to robust, in reddish green to purplish black, rarely green patches.

Sesquiterpene lactones and 3-benzylphthalides from Frullania muscicola☆

Abstract Among the sesquiterpenes from Frullania muscicola two new cis -annelated 12,6-eudesmanolides, a new 12,6-eremophilanolide and two new dimeric eudesmane sesquiterpene lactones were identified in addition to three known eudesmanolides and the sesquiterpene alcohol drimenol. Two of the three 3-benzylphthalides isolated from F. muscicola are also new natural products.

Evaluation of the status of the bryophyte flora of Madeita with reference to endemic and threatened European species

Abstract A preliminary survey of the endemic bryophytes of Madeira is made, with an evaluation of their rarity and the degree to which they are threatened. A list of 108 taxa was selected from the endangered, vulnerable or rare species in Europe, including those endemic for Macaronesia. To evaluate the status of the Madeiran bryoflora the IUCN Survival Service Commission criteria were used to qualify the degree of threat for each taxon. Seven dominant habitats, and two communities of natural vegetation on Madeira, have been defined, and for each species the main habitat and principal community of occurrence are indicated.

The genus Plagiochila (Dumort.) Dumort. (Plagiochilaceae, Hepaticophytina) in Madeira Archipelago - Molecular relationships, ecology, and biogeographic affinities

Plagiochila is one of the most frequent bryophyte genera in Madeira, inhabiting almost all habitats of the Madeiran laurel forest (Laurisilva). Results on the biodiversity, ecology and molecular relationships based on nuclear ribosomal ITS1 and ITS2 sequences of all Plagiochila species referred to Madeira Archipelago are summarized with the aims to provide (i) a first molecular confirmation of a species inventory of a bryophyte genus in a specific geographic region and (ii) a bryophyte example for displaying biogeographic affinities of the Madeiran laurel forest. The molecular analyses confirm the presence of nine species in Madeira, which belong to four sections: Plagiochila sect. Arrectae, sect. Rutilantes, sect. Vagae and sect. Plagiochila. Section Arrectae is represented in Madeira by five species, P. bifaria, P. punctata, P. retrorsa, P. spinulosa, and P. stricta. Section Rutilantes is represented by P. exigua and the Macaronesian endemic P. maderensis, which is reported for the first time to Canary Is. The sections Vagae and Plagiochila are represented by a single species each, P. virginica and P. porelloides, respectively. The molecular data indicate strong biogeographic affinities of the Madeiran Plagiochila flora with Central and northern South America, and to a lesser extent with Africa and Continental Europe.
