Abstract This article deals with the working lives and careers of “ordinary musicians” (i.e., those who are neither rich nor famous) in France and Switzerland. It aims to show how national employment policies frame the different ways of “being” a musician in these two jurisdictions. After presenting the methodology of surveys that we conducted in each of the countries, we show the importance of the national context in shaping the bundle of tasks that define the job of a musician. We then compare the different types of careers and the various ways of being a musician in the two countries. This comparison leads us to distinguish between three ways of defining oneself as a professional musician – as an “artist,” as a “teacher,” or as a “craftsman.”

The sociology of Howard S. Becker will be presented in four parts, each of which will refer to a major book. After a short introduction according to the book standards, the first part will address sociology of norm and deviance, using the first book published by Becker which became a world-wide classic: Outsiders (1963). Then, the second part will show how Becker should be fully considered as a sociologist of work, from his early years with E.C. Hughes whom he studied medicine students and school teachers, but above all with his study of artistic work already in Outsiders; then in Art Worlds (1982) and the many papers, he wrote on ‘doing things together’ in the work process. The next part of the chapter will deal with the sociological work itself, which has been addressed by Becker in several texts, the most important being The Tricks of the Trade (1998). Finally, in the last, conclusive, part, I will consider the whole work of H. S. Becker as the production of a genuinely free scholar, referring mainly to his last books as Do You Know?…, Thinking Together or What About Mozart, What About Murder?
