The ability of SnCl2.2H2O as catalyst to promote the Biginelli three-component condensation reaction from a diversity of aromatic aldehydes, ethyl acetoacetate and urea or thiourea is described. The reaction was carried out in acetonitrile or ethanol as solvents in neutral media and represents an improvement of the classical Biginelli protocol and an advantage in comparison with FeCl3.6H2O, NiCl2.6H2O and CoCl2.6H2O which were used with HCl as co-catalyst. The synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidinones was achieved in good to excelent yields.

The vinylogous Mannich addition of silyloxyfuran 5 to chiral five- and six-membered N -acyliminium ions derived from 3 / 4a , b occurred exclusively through the addition to the N -acyliminium Si face to provide threo - 6 / 7a , b as the major isomer (73–84% yield, 2:1–7:1 diastereoisomeric ratio) which were converted to the corresponding bicyclic lactams 10 and 11 with efficient recovery of the chiral auxiliary.

The TiCl4- promoted addition of allyltrimethylsilane to chiral 5- and 6-membered N-acyliminium ions employing (S)-(+)-mandelic acid, (1R,2S)-trans-2-phenyl-1-cyclohexanol and (1R,2S,5R)-8-phenylmenthol derivatives as chiral auxiliaries occurred with low to moderate diastereoisomeric ratios (1:1-6:1) to afford 2-substituted amides and carbamates in good yields. The best diastereoselection was observed with (1R,2S,5R)-8-phenylmenthol as the chiral auxiliary. The 2-substituted amides and carbamates were converted to the corresponding alkaloids (S)- and (R)-propyl pyrrolidine and coniine with efficient recovery of the chiral auxiliaries.

This study describes for the first time the determination of glycerol and glycerides in samples of biodiesel ethyl esters from sunflower oil and soybean/tallow mixture and biodiesel methyl esters from soybean/tung mixture and tung oil by employing ASTM D6584 method. The results showed that ASTM D6584 can be used for other sources of biodiesel which represent an alternative to biodiesel production, mainly in Brazil.
