A cooperative approach for composite ontology mapping

Cássia Trojahn; Márcia Cristina Moraes; Paulo Quaresma; Renata Vieira

This paper proposes a cooperative approach for composite ontology mapping. We first present an extended classification of automated ontology matching and propose an automatic composite solution for the matching problem based on cooperation. In our proposal, agents apply individual mapping algorithms and cooperate in order to change their individual results. We assume that the approaches are complementary to each other and their combination produces better results than the individual ones. Next, we compare our model with three state of the art matching systems. The results are promising specially for what concerns precision and recall. Finally, we propose an argumentation formalism as an extension of our initial model. We compare our argumentation model with the matching systems, showing improvements on the results.

A Negotiation Model for Ontology Mapping

Cássia Trojahn; Márcia Cristina Moraes; Paulo Quaresma; Renata Vieira

This paper presents an agent negotiation model for ontology mapping. We consider that different agents working on the basis of particular approaches arrive to distinct mapping results that must be shared, compared, chosen and agreed. Then, the final mapping result must reflect a better solution than individual approaches.

How Planning Becomes Improvisation? - A Constraint Based Approach for Director Agents in Improvisational Systems

Márcia Cristina Moraes; Antônio Carlos da Rocha Costa

The aim of this paper is to explain how planning becomes improvisation for agents represented through animated characters that can interact with the user. Hayes-Roth and Doyle [10] proposed some changes in the view of intellectual skills traditionally studied as components of artificial intelligence. One of these changes is that planning becomes improvisation. They pointed out that like people in everyday life, animated characters rarely will have enough information, time, motivation, or control to plan and execute extended courses of behavior. Animated characters must improvise, engaging in flexible give-and-take interactions in the here-and-now. In this paper we present an approach to that change. We propose that planning can be understood as improvisation under external constraints. In order to show how this approach can be used, we present a multi-agent architecture for improvisational theater, focusing on the improvisational directors processes.

Teaching Object-Oriented Programming in First-Year Undergraduate Courses Supported By Virtual Classrooms

Lucia Maria Martins Giraffa; Márcia Cristina Moraes; Lorna Uden

Students struggle to learn computer programming. In recent years, there has been a dramatic drop in the number of students enrolling in IT and computer science courses. There is high dropout rate among first year students undertaking computer science courses. Because introductory programming courses traditionally have a high failure rate, this has been a barrier for students and staff in computer science faculties. Programming is acknowledged by many to be an inherently complex, intellectual activity with students struggling through their first programming subjects and lecturers are struggling to teach it. This problem is no different at School of Computer Science at PUCRS in Brazil. The department has for many years trying to improve the teaching of programming courses to the students. This paper describes the use of a classroom in the MOODLE environment to teach Java programming to first year students.

CV-Muzar Using a Multiagent System for Group Formation

Ana Carolina Bertoletti De Marchi; Márcia Cristina Moraes; Cristiane Durigon Testa

The purpose of this paper is to present two agents’ societies responsible for group formation (sub-communities) in CV-Muzar (Augusto Ruschi Zoobotanical Museum Virtual Community of the University of Passo Fundo). The first is a static society that intends to investigate the groups in the CV-Muzar. The second is a dynamical society that will analyze the existing groups and look for participants that have common subjects in order to constitute a sub-community. The formation of sub-communities is a new module within the CV-Muzar that intends to bring the participants together according to two scopes: similarity of interests and knowledge complementarities.

Improvisational multi-agent organization: using director agent to coordinate improvisational agents

Márcia Cristina Moraes; A.C. da Rocha Costa

Coordination is an important characteristic in the development of agents organizations, allowing agents to understand the existent relationships among agents that compose an specific organization. This paper proposes an improvisational multi-agent organization which incorporate a new model of coordination, named improvised direction. The organization is based on the ideas of improvisational theatre, and improvised direction represents the kind of coordination that an improvisational director executes over its actors. The model of coordination is developed considering an improvisational director functionality, where the director organizes a group of actors using improvisation processes related to constraint satisfaction and analogy by similarity. This kind of coordination is particularly interesting in systems that support human-computer interaction such as learning environments, entertainment and electronic commerce.

João Pedro Dewes Guterres; Márcia Cristina Moraes; Adriana Justin Cerveira Kampff; Milene Selbach Silveira

The production of learning objects has been investigated in order to improve its quality, reusability, among others aspects. In this context, besides of analyzing the final product of the objects and its methodologies, it is also important to analyze the roles involved in the production, including the teams necessary skills to produce a learning object with high quality, reuse and able to solve a problem learning. Thus, this paper presents an analysis of the major roles involved in the production of learning objects. This analysis is based on a set of research and scientific papers that mention the roles involved in the production of learning objects.
