Problems Found During Testing Synchronous Digital Hierarchical Devices Used on Power Protection Systems

This paper examines testing methods and devices for sending data to line protection devices using the synchronous digital hierarchical (SDH) protocol. The paper has arisen as a result of cooperation between the Institute of Power Engineering and the Polish Power Electrical Utility Operator (PSE). The main objective of the tests was to investigate the possibilities of using already installed or new SDH telecommunication devices in power system protection systems. A range of protection functionality tests was considered along with SDH devices tests that focused on certain conditions and possible problems that may occur during normal operating conditions.

Overview and test results of modern pilot schemes for coordination of line distance protection relays

The paper presents a short review of pilots schemes, which are available in modern line distance protection relays, and example results of common pilot schemes tests with the testing methods description. Some differences in implementations of selected pilot schemes have been shown for comparison reasons. Distance protection coordination functions have been tested for GE Multilin UR-series devices. Every type of available pilot scheme has been checked in synthetic test and during the real coordination between D60 and D90Plus devices. For POTT scheme, coordination between two L90 protections has been realized by a sort of available different telecommunication link types, for comparison reasons.

The construction and operation of some examples of MERGING UNITS

The submitted paper describes the construction of modern digital equipment protection automation using Ethernet technology as the main medium of information exchange, allowing building a power system communication architecture that uses all aspects of the IEC61850 standard.
