Influence of Nonionic Surfactant Addition on Drag Reduction of Water Based Nanofluid in a Small Diameter Pipe

Michał Drzazga; Andrzej Gierczycki; Grzegorz Dzido; Marcin Lemanowicz

Abstract The goal of this research was to determine the impact of nonionic surfactants on drag reduction effect in water and metal oxide nanofluid. Two nonionic surfactants (Rokacet O7 and Rokanol K7) and copper(II) oxide water-based nanofluid were examined. Friction factors in a 4 mm diameter pipe for the Reynolds number between 8000 and 50000 were determined. Results showed that addition of nonionic surfactants caused the decrease of friction factor in water and nanofluid. The drag reduction effect was similar in both cases. Presence of nanoparticles in the system has no great influence on drag reduction effect.

The impact of suspension heating method on the flocculation process using thermosensitive polymer is reported in this paper. In experiments a model suspension of chalk in RO water (purified by Reverse Osmosis) was destabilized using a copolymer of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and cationic diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride (DADMAC). The measurements were made using a laboratory setup consisting of a mixing tank with four baffles, Rushton turbine, laser particle sizer Analysette 22 by Fritsch and a system of pump and thermostating devices. Two different modes of heating were used. In the first case the temperature of the system was gently raised above the Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST) using an electrical heater placed inside the tank, while in the second case the system temperature was rapidly raised by an injection of hot water directly into the tank. It was proven that heating method as well as the polymer concentration was crucial to the shape and size of created flocs.

Construction Prototyping, Flight Dynamics Modeling, and Aerodynamic Analysis of Hybrid VTOL Unmanned Aircraft

Roman Czyba; Marcin Lemanowicz; Zbigniew Gorol; Tomasz Kudala

A challenging issue associated with fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is that these vehicles are often not appropriate for operating effectively in limited airspace. This problem emerges especially in urban environment where the usage of a runway is not possible, and UAVs usually have to fly at a relatively low speed and altitude. The development of a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) fixed-wing plane is a promising trend which hopefully will solve this issue. This paper presents the design process of an unmanned vertical take-off and landing aircraft including prototyping of the airframe construction and mathematical modeling as well as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The designed system is to be a hybrid platform, for which different operating modes correspond to the vertical flight, transition, and spatial flight in the airframe system. The paper discusses an iterative design process of the platform with emphasis on CAD design and aerodynamic analysis for particular flight modes. The operating prototype is presented and future plans for platform improvement are discussed.

Application of computer aided tools and methods for unmanned cargo aircraft design

Roman Czyba; Michal Hecel; Karol Jablonski; Marcin Lemanowicz; Krzysztof Platek

Nowadays, novel construction materials, more efficient power supplies and advanced artificial intelligence algorithms allow one to use unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in various fields of life. One of the biggest events promoting this idea is the Air Cargo Challenge (ACC) competition. In this paper the motivation for ACC participation and the overall procedure of CAD aided UAV design are presented. The nonlinear aircraft model as well as Computational Fluid Dynamic simulations are discussed. Finally, some details concerning designed UAV prototype are revealed.
