THE EFFECT OF DIESEL FUEL MIXTURE AND CAMELINA OIL ESTER ON THE PROCESS OF FUEL INJECTION IN TRACTION ENGINE

Stanisław Orliński; Piotr Orliński; Marcin Wojs

This paper presents the results of comparative research on basic physical and chemical properties of pure diesel fuel and two types’ mixtures of Camelina oil ester (Camelina oil ester content of the mixture was 10% and 15%) and diesel fuel. Application of these mixtures has different physicochemical properties to power supply diesel engine, made it possible to detect existing differences in the injection process (pumping and spraying). The analysis of the injection process has been defined through experimental graphs of the fuel pressure in injection line and registered height of the needle injector. With the knowledge of these two fast-changing engine parameters and load velocity conditions, there were calculated: fuel flow speed from nozzle, range and fuel spray disintegration time and the average critical diameter of the droplets. In the final part of the article it was shown, that the fuel with different physicochemical properties has a significant impact on the injection process. There were also made a comparative assessment of the suitability test compounds for use in service.

This article presents the impact of biofuel for compression-ignition engines, produced with the use of innovative production technology, on the emission of toxic substances. The innovative production technology of biodiesel does not generate by-products, eliminating the need for development glycerol fraction and toxic methanol, substances inconvenient for environment. This technology is not currently well known and not used on an industrial scale. The essence of this technology is to carry out the transesterification of triglycerides and methyl acetate in special conditions and with using an alkaline catalyst. The only product of this technology is a mixture of fatty acid methyl esters and glycerol triacetate (no by-products). In the first part of the article, selected physical and chemical properties of such biofuel in comparison to the limits specified in the standard quality requirements for this type of products (EN 14214) were discussed. In the next part, the results of empirical studies were evaluated, showing the influence of speed and load conditions in test engine Perkins 1104C-E44TA on concentrations of harmful components in the exhaust gases such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, particulates. Engine tests were performed with using biofuels selected by the authors. The measurement system, consisted of an AVL CEB II gas analyser and MEXA-1230PM device for measure of particulate matter in real time, to measure the concentrations of toxic exhaust components was used. Based on the concentration of toxic components of exhaust gases according to Test C1 according to ISO 8178, the emission of the above-mentioned normalized toxic components of exhaust gases was determined. In the final part of the article, the results of empirical studies on the concentrations of toxic exhaust gases in the linear-point diagrams, and emission in the bar chart diagrams were presented.

Research on the influence of ozone dissolved in the fuel-water emulsion on the parameters of the CI engine

Marcin Wojs; Piotr Orliński; Wojciech Kamela; Paweł Kruczyński

The article presents the results of empirical research on the impact of ozone dissolved in fuel-water emulsion on combustion process and concentration of toxic substances in CI engine. The effect of ozone presence in the emulsion and its influence on main engine characteristics (power, torque, fuel consumption) and selected parameters that characterize combustion process (levels of pressures and temperatures in combustion chamber, period of combustion delay, heat release rate, fuel burnt rate) is shown. The change in concentration of toxic components in exhausts gases when engine is fueled with ozonized emulsion was also identified. The empirical research and their analysis showed significant differences in the combustion process when fuel-water emulsion containing ozone was used. These differences include: increased power and efficiency of the engine that are accompanied by reduction in time of combustion delay and beneficial effects of ozone on HC, PM, CO and NOX emissions.
