The structure, the objectives and the methodology of a new engineering course are described. The course is intended as a facilitating step connecting the basic portion of an engineering program and the engineering sciences. As such, it invests into a synthesis of different topics of mathematics and numerical methods, and the observation and quantification of physical phenomena to be modeled. The main objective of the course is the coaching of students for the art of problem formulation or modeling. This is done, extensively, with the application of educational methodology characterized as problem solving and case study, with the use of original experimental data generated in class by the students.

This paper describes the structure of a design contest, that is followed by a prototype contest, offered to the undergraduate engineering and engineering technology students in Brazil. The event, known as the TMT-Motoco Program for the Incentive of Technological Creativity, or Program TMT-ITC, started in February 2004 and is meant to be repeated annually. TMT-Motoco do Brasil Ltda, a manufacturer of engines and transmissions, is a Brazilian subsidiary of the Tecumseh Products Company, from Michigan, USA report on the programs operation in 2004 and an early progress report for 2005 is also presented. In the two phases, design and prototype, the selection of the best products is based upon the optimization of an index of merit which emulates a benefit/cost ratio. For the TMT-ITC 2004, the diversity of the engineering solutions brought out by the participants was extraordinary, serving well to demonstrate the difference between the solution of a scientific problem and the solution of a technological problem

Mathematical modeling of water quality in rivers is an important tool for the planning and management of water resources. Nevertheless, the available models frequently show structural and functional limitations. With the objective of reducing these drawbacks, a new model has been developed to simulate water quality in rivers under unsteady conditions; this model runs on the Vensim PLE ® software and can also be operated for steady-state conditions. The following eighteen water quality variables can be simulated: DO, BODc, organic nitrogen (No), ammonia nitrogen (Na), nitrite (Ni), nitrate (Nn), organic and inorganic phosphorus (Fo and Fi, respectively), inorganic solids (Si), phytoplankton (F), zooplankton (Z), bottom algae (A), detritus (D), total coliforms (TC), alkalinity (Al.), total inorganic carbon (TIC), pH, and temperature (T). Methane as well as nitrogen and phosphorus compounds that are present in the aerobic and anaerobic layers of the sediment can also be simulated. Several scenarios were generated for computational simulations produced using the new model by using the QUAL2K program, and, when possible, analytical solutions. The results obtained using the new model strongly supported the results from the QUAL family and analytical solutions.

In this work, the permanent laminar flow in the entrance region of a cylindrical tube is analyzed using a new Fourier series-based approximation technique of similarity for velocity profiles. The similarity method used in this work is well known in the literature on fluid mechanics and can be applied in other engineering education fields. The potential of the original modified Fourier cosine series is compared with the mathematical modelling of the entrance flow. Different physical entrance flow parameters of the interest are obtained through the integral formulation of differential equations for conservation laws. The results of this mathematical approach were found to be compatible with those reported in the literature.

The Reynolds differential equation for hydrodynamic lubrication permits determination of the pressure field under a flat rectangular pad moving over a lubricated plane surface. Even for this simple geometry, and lubricant with constant properties, there is not an exact solution for the Reynolds equation. In this paper an analytical solution obtained from the variational formulation of the problem is presented. The solution is approximate for narrow pads, and exact, in the asymptotic sense, when the width of the pad tends to zero; however, comparison with available numerical solution reveals that, even for a pad with width twice as large as its breadth, the present solution is perfectly adequate.
