Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze the use of energy management and sustainability in the government sector using a study case conducted by the Permanent Program for Efficient Use of Energy at University of Sao Paulo (PURE-USP), a pioneer initiative of its kind active since 1997. Design/methodology/approach – The paper describes the actions and results of PURE-USP. The petroleum and chemical industries are facing pressure to become more energy efficient and sustainable. The use of green energy is a feasible option to address that issue. This paper discusses the application of various source technologies available to offshore petroleum and gas production platforms. The pros and cons of each source is considered, as applied to critical systems, including safety systems. A hybrid system using photovoltaic cells and wind generation, installed on an offshore platform in Brazil is reviewed.

Se presentan el desarrollo de un sistema computacional para la gestion de energia en organismos publicos. El sistema ContaLuzWeb es una herramienta de apoyo a los encargados publicos en el proceso de control y toma de decisiones relativas al consumo y despacho de electricidad. El Sistema de Gestion Energetica es aplicable a cualquier Institucion tanto publica como privada, de servicio o de produccion. Conociendo es forma estadistica los consumos energeticos tanto electricos como termicos, identificados por areas, se pueden analizar la informacion obtenida, obtener indices, comparar los indicadores de distintas areas y finalmente el equipo de gestion de energia de la institucion tomara medidas correctivas necesarias. Con la gestion apoyada por el sistema ContaLuzWeb se desarrollo el programa PureUSP, programa que ha permitido incentivar el uso racional de la energia electrica de la Universidad de San Pablo y aumentar la eficiencia del recurso energetico.
