This paper presents a potentially low cost low sampling noise reader for the Ultra Wideband (UWB) Chipless Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. The reader is designed around the time equivalent approach to reduce its realization cost. A significant effort has been spent for the schematic and layout optimization in order to obtain a very low sampling noise system. This latter aspect is very important to realize a suitable reader for UWB RFID Chipless technology. It is demonstrated that with an accurate design, is possible to realize a low cost equivalent time acquisition system with performances comparable with a high cost real time acquisition system. It is possible acquiring, an UWB impulse of only 70 ps width with high precision.

One of the major drawbacks of chipless ultra-wideband (UWB) radiofrequency identification (RFID) systems is the polarization dependence. Most proposed tags have to be specifically oriented with the reader. This paper proposes a bistatic reading system which can rotate both the readers emitting and receiving polarizations, by using two dual-access dual-polarization UWB antennas. The principle consists of electrically rotating the interrogating signal in transmission, while exploiting the rotation matrix in reception. By being able to rotate both polarizations, it is shown that cross-polarization chipless tags can be read independently of their orientation.

An unusual configuration for chipless radio frequency identification reader based on impulse radio ultrawideband is proposed. The impact of this approach on chipless tag reading performance, compared with the frequency modulated continuous-wave technique, is studied. By reducing the inner sampling clock jitter of the proposed reader, it is possible to have resolution compared with laboratory equipment.
