This is a descriptive, qualitative, and correlation study with 112 elderly aged 60 years or older. This study aimed to identify differences in alcohol consumption according to gender and marital status, and differences in the consumption of medical drugs by gender. It also aims to determine differences in stressful life events by gender, and differences in stressful life events associated to alcohol and medical drugs use and abuse, as well as to know their perceptions on the most stressful life events they have experienced. The results showed significant differences in alcohol consumption by gender (U=154.0, p <0.01), in which the consumption was higher for men. It was reported that the medical drugs consumption (C2 =5.95, p <0.15) and life stress indexes (U=1038.5, p =0.10) are higher for women. The most stressful life events reported were: their health problems or those of their relatives, family and economic problems. This is a descriptive, qualitative, and correlation study with 112 elderly aged 60 years or older. Water availability and salt excess are limiting factors in Mexican mixed pine-oak forest. In order to characterise the acclimatation of native species to these stresses, leaf water (Ψw) and osmotic potentials (Ψs) of Juniperus flaccida, Pinus pseudostrobus and Quercus canbyi were measured under natural drought and non-drought conditions under two different aspects in the Sierra Madre Oriental. Factorial ANOVA revealed significant differences in Ψw and Ψs between two aspects, species and sampling dates. In general, all species showed high predawn and low midday values that declined progressively with increasing drought and soil–water loss. Seasonal and diurnal fluctuation of Ψw and Ψs were higher for J. flaccida and Q. canbyi than for P. pseudostrobus. Leaf Ψw and Ψs were mainly correlated with soil water content, while Ψs of P. pseudostrobus were hardly correlated with environmental variables. Thus, species have different strategies to withstand drought.P. pseudostrobus was identified as a species with isohydric water status regulation, while J. flaccida and Q. canbyi presented water potential patterns typical for anisohydric species. The type of water status regulation may be a critical factor for plant survival and mortality in the context of climate change. Nevertheless, for precise conclusions about the advantages and disadvantages of each type, further long-term investigations are required.

Lapercepcion del consumo de drogas y violencia se identifico en 2 categorias: La Conceptualizacion de la ViolenciaLaboral y la Relacion entre la Violencia y el Consumo de Drogas.DESCRIPTORES: violencia; trabajo de mujeresThe purpose of this study was to explore drug consumption and occupational violence in a sample of 669 adult women, working and living in 13 basic geostatistical areas of Monterrey, Nuevo León, México, using a descriptive correlational design with a qualitative approach. Results indicated that 37.1% of women consumed alcohol, 29.1% tobacco, 0.4% marihuana, 0.1% inhalants, and, among medical drugs, 5% consumed tranquilizers, and 1% other substances (barbiturates, antidepressive agents, Tylenol/codeine). The c2 test found no significant difference between sociodemographic and occupational factors and drug consumption (p<.05), except for the work form (c2=18.08, gl=4, p=.001). However, violence rate showed a positive association with drug consumption (p<.05). This study found 126 cases of violence, 34 of which narrated their experience. Drug consumption and violence perception was identified in 2 categories: Conceptualization of Occupational Violence and Relationship between Violence and Drug Consumption.

ABSTRACT Immunization with the tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine raises controversies on immunogenicity and possible antibody interference. We performed an experimental, double-blind, parallel group controlled clinical trial to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of the Tdap vaccine in 204 pregnant women and their children and to determine its interference in antibody production. Pregnant women 18 to 38 y of age with 12 to 24 weeks gestation, a low obstetric risk, and without serious disease were randomly selected. The experimental group received 0.5 mL IM of Tdap and the control group normal saline. Six blood samples were drawn before and after solution application, and from the umbilical cord of the infants and at 2, 4, and 6 months of age. Pertactin and Pertussis toxin antibodies and possible interference of maternal antibodies with the vaccine were determined. In the experimental group, antibodies against Bordetella pertussis pertactin (anti-PRN) (112 E/mL 95% CI 89.9–139.9) and antibodies against pertussis toxin (anti-PT) (24.0 E/mL, 95% CI 18.3–31.4) were elevated in the mother before vaccination. These were higher in the umbilical cord and descended in the infant at 2 months (71.4 (95% CI 56.8–89.7 and 10.9; 95% CI 8.7–13.7, respectively). Anti-PT showed a delay in production. Tdap safety was confirmed with only mild local pain at 24 and 48 hours. Anti-PRN and anti-PT antibodies in the infant descend at 2 months of age. There is a delay in anti-PT in children of immunized mothers. Further studies are needed to elucidate its clinical significance.

The contents of Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn were seasonally determined in the leaves of the native shrubs – Castela erecta, Celtis pallida, Forestiera angustifolia, Lantana macropoda, and Zanthoxylum fagara – that are browsed by the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). The study was conducted at the Tamaulipan thornscrub region, northeastern Mexico, between summer 2004 and spring 2006. Leaf tissues were collected from three county sites (China, Linares, and Los Ramones). Mineral contents were measured using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. All minerals, in all plants, were significantly different among sites, seasons, and years, as well as the double and triple interactions. In general, plants at the Linares site, that had the highest rainfall, had higher trace element content. Moreover, during the second year, all plant species were higher in micromineral content. Furthermore, during summer were also higher. Regardless of spatiotemporal variations, all plants had suitable levels of Fe and Mn to satisfy the adult range of white-tailed deer requirements. The Cu and Zn presented marginal deficiency in some plants especially during dry seasons (winter and spring). Seasonal variations in minerals could be associated to soil water deficits, excessive irradiance during summer, and extreme low temperatures during winter and spring that could have affected leaf development and micromineral concentrations.
