The impact of selected planned motorways and expressways on the potential accessibility of the Polish-Slovak borderland with respect to tourism development

Daniel Michniak; Marek Więckowski; Marcin Stępniak; Piotr Rosik

Abstract Further tourism development in the Polish-Slovak borderland, as well as its overall economic development, depends on the construction of a motorway and expressway network. This paper analyses the impact of selected planned motorways and expressways (D1, A4, D3/S69, R1/R3/S7, and R4/S19) on the potential accessibility of the Polish-Slovak borderland with respect to the development of tourism. The most important investment project in Slovakia is the completion of the (started) D1 motorway. The R4/S19 and the R1/R3/S7 expressways and the D3 motorway/S69 expressway are expected to contribute to improved cross-border connections.

Evolving tourism on the Baltic Sea coast: perspectives on change in the Polish maritime borderland

Marek Więckowski; Denis Cerić

ABSTRACT This case study considers the touristic characteristics of maritime borders on the Baltic Sea coast. A sequential model is proposed to describe cross-border tourism development, tourist flows and tourism partnerships, and takes account of the particularities of transnational tourism development on the Polish Baltic coast. The paper questions whether and how tourism contributes to transboundary integration and the movement of people in the southern Baltic from the perspective of border changes between Poland and its neighbors. The southern Baltic is a newly emerging space for cross-border tourism development that is undergoing various levels of integration, thanks to the abolition of traditional border functions. The article tries to answer a question about tourism’s role in the integration and the movement of people in the southern Baltic from the perspective of changes in border functions in Poland and its neighboring states.

Tourism Space: An Attempt at a Fresh Look

Marek Więckowski

Abstract In this article, the author is trying to answer the fundamental question: what is present-day tourism space like at a time of highly increasing flows of people or even a shift from the space of a ‘place’ to the space of a ‘flow’? The article puts special stress on how to define the current unique multi-functional space. The author attempts to define tourism space as a new entity, founded on poly-functionality (i.e. different functions and use of the same space both at the same time and in different seasons), multi-scale (overlapping of tourism spaces depending on the scale concerned), multi-layer, as well as the multi-motivation of its creators and users, or even multi-relativity.

From Periphery and the Doubled National Trails to the Cross-Border Thematic Trails: New Cross-Border Tourism in Poland

Marek Więckowski

This paper considers tourism-specific elements of Polish borders, such as principles of human mobility (of which tourism flows are one component). A dynamic model is proposed describing cross-border tourism development that affects cross-border tourism flows and tourism partnerships, and takes account of the particularities of transnational tourism development on the Polish Baltic Sea coast. The paper questions whether and how tourism contributes to the levels of integration and to people movement in the Southern Baltic from the perspective of changes in border functions in Poland and neighboring countries.
