In 2006, the Transcultural Nursing Society created a business plan with a firm commitment to social change and the support of human rights. One of the primary goals of the plan was to seek recognition from the United Nations as a Human Rights Organization. As a first step in articulating this goal, the board of trustees of TCNS tasked a small group of Transcultural Nursing Scholars to develop a position statement. This article is the culmination of the collaborative task forces efforts to define how TCNS seeks the fulfillment of human rights for people of all cultures worldwide.

More than three decades have passed since Leininger established the field of transcultural nursing as a research based specialty which is recognized around the world as an essential and formal area of study and practice. When the importance of culture to nursing was first articulated by Leininger in the early 1950s, knowledge and awareness of these cultural influences were largely unknown and unrecognized in nursing education. The typical 1950s nursing curricula were soundly rooted in biophysical medical content, technical skills, tasks, and practices with no mention of cultural influences. Few nursing faculty had formal academic preparation in the social sciences, and Leininger was the first professional nurse with doctoral preparation in anthropology (Leininger, 1970, 1978, 1981b, 1984a, 1984b, 1989a, 1990b, 1991).

This column is the first of two with a special focus on the construct of caring. In this dialogue, two Leininger scholars together address the questions related to the global impact on practice and the contribution of the model to scientific development in nursing. Then, in a special conversation, nurse theorist Madeleine Leininger offers her view of the impact of her work as well as some of her early experiences.

Inthis article, the authors describe a federally funded project to implement a partnership model involving the Transcultural Nursing Society (TCNS) and two universities that have undergraduate and graduate programs in nursing. The overall goal of the project is to use transcultural nursing as a framework for developing the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor cultural competencies of nursing faculty, practicing .nurses, and nursing students. The purpose of this article is fourfold: (a) to describe the background and environmental context of the TCNS-university partnership; (b) to provide an overview ofthe project objectives, key partners, and organizational structure of the partnership; (c) to discuss the current and future project activities; and (d) to critically examine the benefits of partnering for both the TCNS and the two universities involved in this project.

With the proliferation of electronic resources available to search for subjects related to transcultural nursing and health, nurses must keep abreast of computer-based tools that enable them to quickly and efficiently obtain information on a variety of topics. This article provides suggestions for narrowing and focusing a search on transcultural nursing and related subjects using key terms indexed in the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, International Nursing Index, Medline, Index Medicus, and Psychological Abstracts/PsychLit. Information about accessing the Native American Resource Information Service, Education Resources Information Center, Infotrac/Expanded Academic Index, and Sociological Abstracts also is provided. In the article, selected examples of Internet sites of interest in transcultural nursing and health are identified with their universal resource locator, and they are annotated. Web sites for U.S. government agencies, organizations, and commercial groups that concern transcultural nursing and health are cited. Global transcultural health and nursing Internet resources also are included.

With the proliferation of electronic resources available to search for subjects related to transcultural nursing and health, nurses must keep abreast of computer-based tools that enable them to quickly and efficiently obtain information on a variety of topics. This article provides suggestions for narrowing and focusing a search on transcultural nursing and related subjects using important research databases such as Medline and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL). Information about additional useful databases such as Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) and Psychological Abstracts (PsycINFO) is also provided. In the article, selected examples of Internet sites of interest in transcultural nursing and health are identified and described in brief annotations. Web sites for U.S. government agencies, organizations, and commercial groups that concern transcultural nursing and health care are cited. Global transcultural health and nursing Internet resources also are included.
