e-Assessment for Skill Acquisition in Online Engineering Education: Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract This chapter presents a literature review of e-assessment in online higher education with a special focus on skill acquisition in engineering education. Skill acquisition is important in engineering education, especially skills involving practical problem solving to cater to the demands of a rapidly changing industry. Therefore, knowledge and understanding gained from learning materials alone is not enough without gaining the higher-order cognitive skills needed to solve practical problems. In this case, assessment can be used to evaluate whether students are capable of achieving the required skills as well as for continuously improving engineering education. This chapter first addresses the general aspects: assessment in the form of e-assessment; skill and knowledge assessment; supporting learning through formative e-assessment; standards, specifications and models to design and develop e-assessment systems that are interoperable and secure; previous research on skill acquisition in engineering education; and, as the focus point, the challenges and opportunities in skill acquisition in online engineering education.

Mathematical e-Learning

Les tecnologies educatives van canviant la manera d’impartir l’ensenyament superior. Aquestes tecnologies inclouen, entre altres, els entorns d’aprenentatge virtual o sistemes de gestio d’aprenentatge individual i col•laboratiu, recursos d’internet per a l’ensenyament i l’aprenentatge, materials academics en format electronic, programari especificament orientat, metodes i eines que milloren el treball en grup (groupware) i programari per a xarxes socials. Gracies a l’acces generalitzat a la tecnologia i a la innovacio tecnologica, no tan sols hem estat testimonis de la creacio i el desenvolupament d’universitats en linia en les ultimes decades, sino que a mes assistim a una gran transformacio en la manera d’impartir l’ensenyament a les universitats presencials mes tradicionals. Aquesta transformacio afecta la naturalesa dels cursos i els programes de llicenciatura que ofereixen els sistemes d’ensenyament superior a tot el mon. Aquestes innovacions tecnologiques han incrementat les oportunitats d’aprenentatge a distancia, ja que els estudiants que tenen limitacions de temps –per dificultats laborals o de desplacament– o de lloc –a causa de la situacio geografica o d’una discapacitat fisica– ara tenen la flexibilitat necessaria per a accedir a cursos i llicenciatures d’acord amb les seves necessitats.

A Technology Enhanced Assessment System for Skill and Knowledge Learning

This paper presents a technology-enhanced assessment system that can be used for both skill and knowledge learning. For this purpose, a general technology-enhanced assessment system is designed and developed for an online logic course at a fully online university, taking into account e-learning standards and specifications, which can be easily adapted to any institute and subject requiring a high level of skill learning. Through this system, both learning and formative assessment facilities are provided to students. To evaluate its effects on student learning process, the system is applied in a real logic course at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC). Based on the evaluation, it shows that students� are more engaged with the system and, as a result, their performance in the subject had improved. Also, based on the feedback obtained through the evaluation, it shows that students are satisfied with the facilities and assessments provided by the system. Overall, the introduction of the technology-enhanced assessment system for skill and knowledge learning has yielded some interesting results.

An Architecture for Technology-Enhanced Assessment of High Level Skill Practice

This paper presents an architecture for a technology-enhanced assessment system for assessing both skill and knowledge acquisition in online higher education while adhering to standards and specifications. This technological requirement is achieved through designing a system which allows the integration of existing partially effective tools with common Learning Management Systems (LMSs) according to standard conformance. The system is designed and developed in a way that it can be used as modules to existing systems or LMSs.
